Today, I am reading and commenting on Luke 12

I have a Youtube video of me reading the Scripture passage and my comments. Please check it out and let me know your thoughts.

In today’s passage, Jesus teaches about what we should value.  In particular, He teaches us not to make acquiring wealth our top priority.  He begins this teaching by warning us against stockpiling wealth.  Jesus illustrates that with a man who was earning enough to easily meet his needs and had plenty leftover.  That man began to stockpile his wealth, then died overnight and all of his wealth went to strangers.  Jesus explained to his disciples that they should not worry about what they would eat, or what they would wear.  God knows that we need such things and will provide them for us.  We should not strive after food and clothing.  Instead we should seek to enter into God’s kingdom and these other needs will follow.  Rather than stockpiling wealth in this world in order to provide for ourselves in a future which we are not guaranteed, we should use any surplus we have to provide for the needy.  If we do so, we will have treasure in heaven.

Then Jesus says something which has multiple, related, meanings, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”  First, if you put all of your effort into something, it will be the thing which you value most.  I want to flesh that out.  If you spend all of your time building a business, that business will be the most important thing to you, even if you started putting in that work to acquire money for something else.  If you don’t have time for that something else, than that isn’t what is important to you.  Second, if you truly value something, you will put your effort into that something.  It is a two way thing.  If you value God’s kingdom, you will put your effort into furthering it.  However, even if you don’t value God’s kingdom today, if you put your effort into it, you will value it tomorrow.  You will spend your time and money on what you value…and, if you spend your time and money on something, that will become what you value.
