June 23, 2026 Bible Study — Choose Carefully When to Speak and When to Remain Silent

Today, I am reading and commenting on Psalms 38-44.

I have a Youtube video of me reading the Scripture passage and my comments. Please check it out and let me know your thoughts.

I want to note that this blog is about my thoughts after I read the Bible passage for the day.  Sometimes that will be things I learned about being faithful to God from the passage, sometimes it will be other thoughts inspired by the passage.  Psalm 38 is a cry to God from David when he was feeling depressed, perhaps he was also suffering physical illness.  My take away from it today is that we should cry out to God when we are suffering either physically or mentally, or both.

I always feel challenged by Psalm 39.  At the beginning I feel like David had said something which he thought he should not have said.  This led him to try to keep silent when in the presence of those who did not honor God, but that just worked him up worse than the consequences of the words he thought ill-spoken.  So, he spoke, but when he spoke he spoke to God not his fellow man.  He asked God to control his words and keep him from saying that which would lead others to hold him in contempt.  I think this is a good thing for us to seek.  There will be times where we will be held in contempt for saying what God wishes us to say, but we should ask God not to let us speak on His behalf in ways which will lead people to hold Him in contempt.  As I said, in Psalm 39 David spoke about keeping his mouth shut in order to not say the wrong thing.  Then in Psalm 40 he says that he did not keep silent.  Rather he spoke up about God’s faithfulness and salvation in front of everyone.

I think this is one of those combinations which teach us something important.  We should keep our mouths shut when we might says something which degrades and brings down others.  However, we should open our mouths and speak about God’s salvation when we have the opportunity.  I need to keep my mouth shut when I feel inspired to try and make those I disagree with feel small, but I need to open my mouth when I have the opportunity to lift up God’s name.

I hoped this would come out more clearly, but I pray that God speaks through it any way.
