Proverbs 3:16-18

Wisdom offers us a long life and wealth. They are ours to have if we embrace wisdom and hold to her tightly. This does not mean that everyone who is wealthy is wise, nor that everyone who is poor is foolish. Different people are called to different places in life and wisdom helps them make the most of the opportunities they are given.

Psalm 13:1-6

Our troubles may make it seem as if God has forsaken us, but it is more likely that they are because we have forgotten Him. If we trust in His unfailing love, we will rejoice because He has rescued us. “I will sing to the Lord because He is good to me.” How true that is.

Matthew 10:24-11:6

I never really thought about today’s passage in the context of discussions we often have about Church unity. In this passage Jesus tells us that if we love anyone or anything more than we love Jesus we are not worthy of Him. He says this right after telling us that He did not come to bring peace. In other words, if we love Church unity more than we love Christ, we are not worthy of being His Church.

At the end of the passage, John the Baptist’s disciples approach Jesus and ask Him, on behalf of John, if He was the expected Messiah. Rather than directly answer their question, Jesus told them to tell John what they had heard and seen. He then summarizes what they would have seen: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, lepers are healed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and good news is preached to the poor. That is the standard we have to live up to, if the Church is not doing those things it is failing in its mission.

Genesis 31:17-32:12

As soon as Laban learned that Jacob had left with his wives and flocks, he set out after him. From the description it appears that Laban intended to stop Jacob by force. However, the night before Laban overtook Jacob he received a dream warning to leave Jacob alone. Laban proceeded to claim that if Jacob had only told him he wanted to go he would have thrown a farewell party for him and sent him on his way. In their confrontation, Jacob once more gives credit to God for his success.
Jacob goes on to meet his brother Esau. He makes all of the plans he can to ingratiate himself with Esau. He sends a gift flock on ahead of the rest of his flocks and family. He then divided his household into two groups, so that if Esau attacked one the other could possible escape. Yet after making all of his plans, he does not rely on his skill or planning. Rather he turns to God and asks for his protection. Let us follow his example and plan for the troubles we face in this life as best we can, but recognize that we depend on God for our safety.

Proverbs 19:15-16

God’s commandments teach us how to lead a healthy and happy life. Those who despise His commandments will follow a lifestyle which leads to an early death. There have been multiple studies over the years which show how those who reject God are more likely to smoke, abuse alcohol, and abuse other drugs.

Psalm 13:1-6

Until I started working on this blog and reading through the Bible each year I never realized how much those who wrote the psalms dealt with depression. Nor did I realize how much the various psalms offer a suggested antidote for depression. Today, the psalmist asks God how long he will struggle with anguish and sorrow, how long he will struggle with depression. Then he declares that he will trust in God’s unfailing love, he will sing to the Lord.
Throughout the psalms we are told that the answer to depression is to place our trust in God and to praise Him for His goodness. I have never suffered from depression, but I know that this will work. It is not easy and requires self-discipline. I do not offer this as condemnation of those who struggle with depression. Rather I am suggesting it as an avenue to finding release from that depression. Seek the Lord, trust in Him, praise His name. Depression makes it harder to do those things, but doing those things will hold depression at bay and in time will drive it away. There is hope in the Lord for overcoming depression.

Romans 4:1-12

Paul illustrates his point about no one earning righteousness by their actions by referencing Abraham. Abraham was counted as righteous, not because of what he did, but because of his faith. Abraham did not earn his righteousness, it was a gift from God. In the same way, we cannot earn righteousness through our actions. We must accept it as a gift from God. Just as Abraham was circumcised as a sign of his faith and as a result of the righteousness which God gave him, so we follow God’s instructions as a result of the righteousness which God has given us. We do not follow God’s instructions in order to become righteous. We follow God’s instructions because He has made us righteous.

1 Chronicles 24-26:11

This passage has a long list of various groups of priests and Levites and the tasks they were assigned in the Temple. Which makes it easy to overlook an important insight contained within it. In order to avoid favoritism, or the appearance of favoritism, the duties of these various groups were assigned by lot. Those who were chosen to serve in each role were chosen irrespective of skill level, experience, or age. They were each chosen by lot (a form of random assignment) as directed by God. This is something we should take a lesson from in our congregations today. There are times when we should choose those given desirable appointments by some form of random assignment so that no one can claim that the person so chosen was chosen because of favoritism on the part of leadership.

January 15, 2014 Bible Study — The Student Is Not Greater Than the Teacher

I am using One Year Bible Online for my daily Bible study. For today, One Year Bible Online links here. I have found that by writing this daily blog of what I see when I read these scriptures, I get more out of them. I hope that by posting these ruminations others may get some benefit as well. In order to make that possible I read the passages and write my thoughts a day, or more. in advance. My work schedule has recently changed, meaning that I may not have time every day to complete these. As a result, I am trying to get several days ahead. I hope this does not negatively impact the quality of these posts (if that is possible). If you have any thoughts or comments regarding these verses or what I have written about them, please post them.

Genesis 31:17-32:12

Jacob gathered his family and set off towards the land of his father while Laban was some distance away. While they were gathering their things, Rachel stole Laban’s household idols and took them with them. When Laban learned of Jacob’s departure he gathered a force and set out in pursuit, apparently planning on forcing Jacob to return to his lands (or perhaps to merely take Jacob’s wealth). However, just before he overtook Jacob, God appeared to Laban and warned him to not harm Jacob in any way. When Laban finally overtook Jacob he confronted Jacob over leaving secretly and stealing his idols. Laban told Jacob that the only reason he was not destroying him for the effrontery was because God had warned him not to the previous night. Jacob said that he was afraid that Laban would prevent him from leaving, or, if he allowed him to leave, would have prevented him from taking his wives, children, and possessions with him. Jacob then denied having taken Laban’s idols.
Laban searched through Jacob’s possessions for his missing idols, but was unable to find them because Rachel hid them under her seat and claimed it was that time of month when Laban searched her tent. When Laban was unable to find his idols among Jacob’s possessions Jacob lost it with Laban and confronted him by laying out his grievances towards Laban over how Laban had treated him while he was with him. That the only reason Jacob was able to leave Laban with more than the clothes on his back was because God was with him. Laban was afraid to take his conflict with Jacob any further because of the vision he had had the night before, so he made a treaty with Jacob that neither would harm the other and that Jacob would treat Laban’s daughters, Leah and Rachel, well.
When Jacob departed from Laban, he sent messengers ahead of himself and his family to inform Esau of his coming. The messengers went to Esau and returned to Jacob. When they got back to Jacob, they told him that Esau was coming to meet him with an army of 400 men. Jacob was terrified and made preparations so that at least part of his family might escape. Then Jacob called on God acknowledging all the good which God had done him and that he was unworthy of the blessings which God had given him. Jacob concluded his prayer by asking God to save him once more, to rescue him from his brother Esau. Let us follow the model which Jacob offers us with this prayer.

Matthew 10:24-11:6

Jesus begins today’s passage by reminding us that the student is not greater than the teacher nor is the servant greater than the master. Since Jesus was called the prince of demons, we can expect to be called much worse. If we truly understand why we should fear God, who is the only one who can destroy our souls, we will not fear those who can only bring harm to our bodies. We need to bear in mind that not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without God being aware of it. This means that we should have no fear because God values us much more than He values sparrows.
If we acknowledge our relationship with Christ here on earth, He will acknowledge our relationship before God in heaven. But if we deny our relationship with Christ here on earth, He will deny our relationship before God in heaven. Those who show kindness and hospitality to use are showing kindness and hospitality to Christ, those who show kindness and hospitality to Christ are showing kindness and hospitality to God the Father. Then to make sure we understand His point, Jesus tells us that those who are receptive to a prophet because he is speaking the word of God will receive the same reward as the prophet himself. Those who are receptive to a righteous person because the person is righteous will receive the same reward as the righteous person.

Psalm 13:1-6

The psalmist was struggling with depression when he wrote today’s psalm. He recognized that the first step to facing and defeating depression is to trust and praise God. I will sing to the God, for He has rescued me. I may not see His rescue yet, but I know that the wheels are in motion.

Romans 4:1-12

Paul continues on his theme about salvation through faith by pointing to the example of Abraham, who was viewed by the Jews as their forefather. Paul points out that the Scripture tells us that Abraham was counted as righteous because of his faith, before Abraham was circumcised. Circumcision, rather than being a source of Abraham’s righteousness, was a sign of Abraham’s righteousness, a product of that righteousness. Paul concludes that Abraham was the spiritual father not of those who were circumcised, but of those to whom righteousness is credited because they believe.

***

Once more Paul very subtly tells us that we act because of the righteousness we have received, not in order to receive that righteousness. We receive righteousness through our faith in Jesus Christ. Once we have received that righteousness, we begin to act according to God’s will as a result of receiving that righteousness. Paul points out that not even Abraham was in a position to boast about what he had done in service to God. If Abraham was not in a position to boast about what he had done in service to God, then no one is.

Psalm 13:1-6

The psalmist asks God how long God will allow him to suffer, how long God will allow his enemy to have the upper hand? Yet, even though it is clear that the psalmist is feeling like God has abandoned him, the psalmist makes known that he has faith that God will rescue him. The psalmist trusts the Lord and acknowledges that the Lord has already done good for him. When times seem difficult and God seems far away, I will still trust in Him, because He has rescued me in the past and I know that He will rescue me again. God does not rescue me because I am good. He rescues me because He is good.

Today’s proverbs sum up two basic truths. If you are too lazy to work when there is work to be done, you will experience hunger. If you keep God’s commandments, you will have a happy healthy life. If you break them you will experience suffering and death.

Genesis 31:17-32:12

After talking to his wives, Jacob gathered his household and set out for Canaan. Three days later when Laban learned that Jacob had fled he gathered a force of his relatives and pursued. The night before Laban caught up with Jacob he had a dream in which God warned him not to harm Jacob. When Laban caught up with Jacob he confronted him with sneaking off and claimed that if Jacob had told him he was going he would have sent him off with a celebration (a statement that is somewhat questionable considering the force he mustered to pursue Jacob). Laban then asks why on top of all that he had stolen his household gods (we had been earlier told that Rachel stole Laban’s idols before she left). Jacob tells Laban that he was afraid that Laban would have taken his daughters away from Jacob if he had known that Jacob was leaving, but that if Laban wanted to search the things he had for anything of Laban’s to go ahead. Jacob said that anyone who was found with anything stolen from Laban would be put to death. Laban searched through all of the goods in Jacob’s household, except for the camel saddle upon which Rachel sat. She told him that she could not get up for him because it was that time of month, after hiding the stolen idols in the saddle before sitting on it. When Laban failed to find the stolen gods (which Jacob was unaware of), Jacob lost his temper and laid out all of his grievances against Laban.
Laban tells Jacob that everything that he has is Laban’s, but there is nothing he can do about it since God warned him to not harm Jacob. Laban then proposes a covenant of peace between them. Jacob agrees. The two men entered into a covenant of peace, swearing by God. It is interesting to note that Laban swore by the God of his grandfather and Jacob’s grandfather, while Jacob swore by the God of his father. Once they had entered into the covenant, Jacob offered a sacrifice to God and invited Laban and the men with him to a meal. In the morning the two groups went their separate ways.
Jacob sent messengers ahead to Esau to tell him that he was coming. The messengers returned and told Jacob that Esau was coming to meet him, with 400 men. This frightened Jacob, so he divided his household into two groups, hoping that if Esau attacked one group the other could escape. But Jacob did not stop his preparation there. He then prayed to God. He said that he had come to this place on God’s command and that all he had was given to him by God. In his prayer, Jacob told God that he was not worthy of all that God had done for him, but nevertheless he was counting on God to protect him from his brother’s anger. There is a lesson here for us. Jacob made the best preparations that he could for the safety of his loved ones. Then he acknowledged that only God could ensure their safety and that all that he had was from God. I strive to face life in the same manner. I will make the best preparations I can, but will acknowledge that all that I have is from God and only God can keep it safe.

Matthew 10:24-11:6

Jesus tells the disciples that the student is not greater than the teacher. Since He had been called the prince of devils, why should we be surprised when they say the same about us? I will not be afraid of those who threaten to kill my body since they cannot touch my soul. I will fear only God, who can both kill my body and my soul. However, I will not be afraid because God cares even for the sparrows and I am assured that He values me more than those. If I publicly acknowledge my faith in Christ before the world, He will acknowledge me before the Father. If, on the other hand I deny my faith, Christ will disown me before the Father. This is my greatest fear, that I am too ready to disown Christ in front of others to avoid ridicule. Let me take up my cross and follow God.
John the Baptist sent his disciples to ask Jesus if He was the one they were waiting for or if they should look for another. Jesus replied, “The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.” These are the signs of the Kingdom of God. Does the Church still demonstrate these signs of the coming of the Kingdom of God? Do we have the faith to believe that we should demonstrate these signs? Do I?

1 Chronicles 24-26:11

This passage tells us that David, with the assistance of the political leaders of Israel and the leaders of the clans of the Levites divided the priestly families into groups. They then divided the various priestly duties among the family groups by casting lots, so that no favoritism would be shown. Then they did the same thing with the rest of the tribe of Levi, dividing the Levitical duties in the same manner. Then we are told that David and the army commanders chose certain men to proclaim God’s messages to musical accompaniment. Finally we are told the divisions of gatekeepers. What is important about this passage is that a strong effort was made to ensure that the duties relating to worshiping God were divided up in a manner that was fair and impartial. The effort was made to ensure that one group of priests could not say, “We are better than you, that is why we were assigned this task.” Nor could a group say, “You were only assigned that task because David (or some other powerful figure) likes you better.” This tells us something for how we structure our congregations today. The way that church offices are filled must not only be fair and equitable, they must be perceived to be fair and equitable.

Romans 4:1-12

Paul turned to Abraham, the founder of Judaism. Paul pointed out that Abraham was not counted as right with God because of his good deeds. Instead the Bible tells us that Abraham was counted as righteous because of his faith in God. Or as the NIV translates it, “Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness.” Once he established that Abraham’s righteousness was not a product of his actions, Paul proceeds to discuss whether circumcision is a necessary precondition. He points out that Abraham was credited as righteous before he was circumcised, that circumcision was a sign that Abraham had faith, not a precondition to that faith (and the righteousness that came from it). Paul concludes that Abraham is the spiritual father of those who have not been circumcised but have faith. That, just as with Abraham, their faith will be credited to them as righteousness. Paul further says that Abraham is also the spiritual father of those who have been circumcised, but only if they have the same faith that he, Abraham, had before he was circumcised. Abraham had a faith that led him to take action. If we have a similar faith, we will also take action. That action does not save us, our faith saves us, but that faith will lead us to act.

Psalm 13:1-6

The psalmist cries out here to God, wanting to know how long he must wait for God’s providence. He wants to know how much longer will he suffer until God saves him from his trouble. But then he does something that is a model for us all. He declares that he trusts in God’s love, that he will rejoice because God has rescued him. He does this even before God rescues him because he has faith that God will indeed rescue him. This is a difficult thing to do, to praise God for rescuing us from trouble, even before we see that rescue. We should remember to sing to the Lord because he has been good to us, even in our times of trouble.

Proverbs 19:15-16

Proverbs on laziness always trouble me, because I tend to be lazy. On the other hand, I have always worked hard enough to feed myself, so perhaps my definition of lazy is different from that of the writer of the proverb. The second of today’s proverbs reminds me of something that I have long said. God’s commands are not arbitrary. They are based on the way he designed us and this world to work. If we do not follow God’s commands, we will suffer for it, not because God punishes us, but because we will not function in our optimum manner.
