June 28, 2023 Bible Study — Do Not Fall for Satan’s Lies

Today, I am reading and commenting on  Psalms 72-77.

The psalmist speaks of a time when he almost fell for one of Satan’s lies, when he almost gave in to the temptation to believe that there was no value in seeking God’s righteousness.  He envied the wicked and arrogant, who believe that God does not know of their wickedness.  It is an easy lie to fall for, we see that the wicked seem to have all that they desire and face no consequences for their evil, and begin to wonder if doing what is right has any benefit.  However, when we enter into God’s presence we discover that the wicked gain nothing through their wickedness that we truly desire.  Further imitating the wicked would cost us that which we value most, a relationship with God.

Then the psalmist speaks of the challenges when wicked men oppress those who seek God and troubles abound.  We sometimes face similar challenges.  We, like the psalmist, cry out to God asking how long He will allow the righteous to suffer and the wicked to prosper.  We may feel like God will not answer our prayers for justice, and will allow people to belittle Him, and those who trust Him, but God tells us in the Scripture that He chooses the appointed time.  He will judge with equity.  When times seem dark and God seems far, let us remember what God has done in the past and meditate on His power.  Then we will hear His voice and see His judgement upon the wicked.

June 28, 2022 Bible Study — Only That Which Conforms To God’s Will Is Settled

Today, I am reading and commenting on  Psalms 72-77.

The first of today’s psalms calls on God to endow the king with justice as God see justice.  The psalmist asks God to make it so that the king defends the afflicted, saves the children of the needy, and crushes the oppressor.  Let us pray something similar for those in positions of government authority today.   And yet, we often do not have such rulers.  Instead we have the opposite.  It would be all too easy for us to slip when such is the case and conclude that the effort to keep our hearts pure and our hands innocent is in vain.   We begin to envy the wicked and the arrogant.  When we see how they appear to prosper, we may begin to wonder if perhaps we should have acted similarly.  But, if we enter into God’s presence, we will see that nothing they possess compares to being able to commune with God.  When the time is right, God will sweep them aside, but those who love and obey God will be taken into His glory.  Today we may see the wicked mock and revile God, but I will praise Him and tell of His deeds.  There are those who speak of “settled science” and “settled law”, but God reveals that only that which conforms to His will is truly settled for all time.  Let us praise God, and tell all who will listen of what He has done.

Surely God is good to Israel,

to those who are pure in heart.

But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;
I had nearly lost my foothold.
For I envied the arrogant
when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

If I had spoken out like that,
I would have betrayed your children.

But as for me, it is good to be near God.
I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge;
I will tell of all your deeds.

June 28, 2021 Bible Study — When The Wicked Prosper Do Not Lose Hope

Today, I am reading and commenting on  Psalms 72-77.

The psalmist tells us that it may seem like the wicked are victorious and that they will never fall, but that we should not be fooled by such appearances.  What he writes in Psalm 74 really speaks to me about our society today.  God’s enemies are seeking to crush all worship of Him. It even seems as though their onslaught cannot be stopped.  They have destroyed many bastions where God was worshiped and driven His worshipers out.  They make examples of those who defy them by worshiping God and nothing seems to slow their victories.  Nevertheless, we who worship God know that He has power over all of the earth and that His enemies will be victorious for only so long as it serves His purpose.  Let us not lose faith in Him.  If we put our hope in Him, we will see that hope fulfilled.  Psalm 73 reminds us that when we begin to think that the wicked will always prosper and that there is no value in following God’s commands we need to meditate on His words and spend time in fellowship with Him and with those who worship Him.  When we do that God will show us the value of following His commands, and the fate of those who reject Him.

June 28, 2020 Bible Study Do Not Allow Envy Of The Wicked Make You Bitter

I am using the daily Bible reading schedule from “The Bible.net” for my daily Bible reading.

Today, I am reading and commenting on Psalms 72-77.

It is easy to become convinced that the wicked and proud have it good, to become envious of them and begin to think that living a godly life is pointless.  However, if we take ourselves into God’s presence we will realize that such thinking only hurts ourselves, making us bitter and resentful.  The wicked burn and destroy that which reminds them of God and which calls them to be accountable for their actions, but God will bring them to justice at the time He has planned.

The psalmist speaks of being troubled and hard pressed, of crying out to God and not being comforted, of being unable to sleep and too distressed to even pray.  He felt like God had abandoned him and would never restore his joy.  Then he remembered the great things which God had done in the past.  Doing so reminded him that God does His great works in His time not ours.  God’s plans will come to fruition, His glory will be shown to the nations once more.  If we think on the great things which God has done in the past we will realize that He will do similar things in the future.  Every time I begin to feel like I am in a hole out of which I can never climb, I remember when I felt that way in the past and cried out to God.  My situation may be different today than that which I experienced before, but God answered my cries then and He will answer them now.

June 28, 2019 Bible Study — Pray For Those In Government

I am using the daily Bible reading schedule from “The Bible.net” for my daily Bible reading.

Today, I am reading and commenting on Psalms 72-77.

In 1 Timothy 2 Paul tells us to pray for our rulers and government authorities.  Psalm 72 gives us guidance as to what those prayers should contain.  We should pray that those in government have the same love for justice and righteousness which God has.  We should pray that they be fair to the poor and rescue the needy from their oppressors.  We should pray for the prosperity of the nation, understanding that such is dependent on the previous things.  We should even pray for our government to be dominant in the world, exercising power over other nations, but only insomuch as it pursues justice and righteousness and defends the oppressed.

When we start to envy the wicked rich we have lost focus on what is important.  While it may seem like they have it all together, and perhaps they gain everything they desire living the life God intends for us is much better.  Even if the wicked truly get everything they desire such is only the case because they do not desire the things which truly bring happiness.  When we envy the wicked we become bitter and torn up inside.  Healing comes from seeking out God’s sanctuary and the fellowship of those who love Him.  Then we will remember what is truly important to us and be inspired to cling to that which truly brings happiness.

June 28, 2018 Bible Study

I am using the daily Bible reading schedule from “The Bible.net” for my daily Bible reading.

Today, I am reading and commenting on Psalms 72-77.

The first of today’s psalms is a prayer for good government. A good government implements God’s justice. It defends the poor and rescues the children of the needy. The godly will flourish under such a government and its power will extend well beyond its borders. All the nations of the earth are blessed when even one country has a good government by God’s standards.

We are often tempted to envy the proud and wicked because life seems so easy for them. It is hard to understand why they prosper in a world where God is in control. But if we truly fellowship with God we will understand that the wicked will face His judgement. The joy of knowing that God cares for us and walks with us far outweighs any pleasure the wicked might obtain from this world. In God’s time they will learn the emptiness of the pleasures they seek. We must not become bitter because the wicked appear to be thriving.

Psalms 74 and 75 remind me of my thoughts and concerns about the fact that we do not see miraculous signs around us in the way my reading of the New Testament suggests that we should. These two psalms are very heartening for me in light of that. They suggest that the absence of miraculous signs is a part of God’s plan, rather than a sign of our lack of faithfulness. Those who set themselves up against God feel empowered by God’s lack of signs, but God has warned them. In due time, in God’s time, He will rise up and bring judgment against them. He will not overlook their insults indefinitely. While those who continued to praise Him, even when it seemed He would no longer act, will be rewarded.

June 28, 2017 Bible Study — Focus On What God Has Done In Order To See What He Will Do

I am using the daily Bible reading schedule from “The Bible.net” for my daily Bible reading.

Today, I am reading and commenting on Psalms 72-77.

I will once again encourage those reading this blog to read the passage for the day. The psalmist expresses his ideas much better than I can, and I cannot cover everything that is in the passage. I will start by writing about Psalms 73. There we are warned about focusing our attention on the wicked and the things they do. If we do that we will become envious of them and wonder what point there is to keeping ourselves pure. If we instead focus on God and on worshiping Him we will realize that the “joys” and pleasures of the wicked are empty and fleeting. Time spent watching the wicked will leave us bitter and torn up inside. Time spent with God will heal us inside and drain the bitterness from our souls.

It may seem like we no longer see God’s miraculous signs and hear no word from His prophets, but that is because we listen to those who insult God. Instead let us praise Him and tell the world about the wonderful things He has done. At the time He has selected God will bring judgement against the wicked and increase the power of the godly. We do not see God’s miraculous signs because we do not look for them. We do not hear God’s voice because we are not listening. If we recount the small things which God has done, we will start to see the bigger things which He does. As we recount the words we have heard from God, we will hear His voice more clearly.

Today, I am reading and commenting on Psalms 72-77.

Psalm 72 gives us an outline of what we should pray for our government and government authorities. We should pray that they have God’s love of justice, that they defend the poor and the powerless. A government which acts according to the outline given will last and will be remembered favorably. When our government is not such a government it is easy to become envious of the proudly wicked, those to whom everything seems to come easily who have no thoughts but for their own desires. However, if we allow ourselves to do so we will become bitter and torn up inside. The wicked may have everything their heart desires on this earth, but when God brings that time to an end they will have nothing. However, those who desire God more than anything on earth will have the eternal joy of being with Him.

God will bring His judgment against the wicked of this earth at the time He has prepared. In the meantime, when it seems like the good times are in my past and suffering is all I can expect in the future, I will remember the great things God has done and that He has promised to do similar things in the future. I will proclaim God’s glory and praise His name, even when times are hard. The treasures of the wicked will be handed over to those who serve God when the time that God has chosen comes.
