Proverbs 24:21-22

The proverb writer advises us to fear both God and the government. This is certainly sound advice, as is his advice to not join in rebellion against either. Both have the power to make your life miserable. However, there is a difference. while both may want what is best for you (God certainly does, and oftentimes government officials do), only God actually knows what that is.

Psalm 76

None can stand against God when His anger at evil bursts forth. God is slow to anger because He loves each and every one of us, but He will only allow oppression and other evils to go on for so long before He acts to bring judgment against those who are guilty. This is the reason I honor and praise His name.

Colossians 1:1-17

The Gospel changes lives. It has changed mine and it can change yours. In order for this change to happen you need to understand the truth about God’s grace, that we cannot earn His love, but He loves us nonetheless. When we stop doing good in order to prove our worth and instead begin doing good because we love God and others. At that point we begin to allow the Holy Spirit to enter into our lives and remove the desire to sin.
The Holy Spirit will give us knowledge of God’s will if we open our minds and hearts to receiving it. The more we are willing to do and follow God’s will, the more He will reveal it to us. There is a feedback loop pointed out in this passage: the more we pray, the more spiritual wisdom we will gain; the more spiritual wisdom we have, the more we will pray. I am earnestly seeking that the Holy Spirit train me to pray more.

Jeremiah 2:31-4:18

I was struck by the first verse of this passage. Day after day I read the comments of people who are crying out, “At last we are free from God! We don’t need him anymore!” Yet, problems escalate and get worse. They seek one solution after another, but refuse to turn to God. Our society is killing the innocent and the poor, even when they were not caught breaking into their neighbors house. We have videos come out of people profiting from killing the unborn, and others respond, “Well, what’s wrong with that?” We have civilians killing each other in the streets of our cities, many times the deaths are innocent bystanders, and people are protesting about criminals killed by the police. We have a tragic incident of a man shooting up a community college and our politicians call for more laws.
It is time, and past time, for people to stand up and declare, “Turn to God and beg His forgiveness. Repent of your sins and follow His commands.” We can seek on solution and another, but the only answer which will change us so that these tragedies stop happening is if we seek know God and follow His will.

Proverbs 24:21-22

If you spend your time with those who rebel against authority, you are likely to get caught up in the troubles that come upon them as a result. At least in part this is a warning against getting caught up with those who have a problem with authority figures, those who push back against anyone they perceive as being in a position of authority. Such people often fight with authorities, even when the authorities are inclined to approve of their actions. They will often drag those around them into the confrontation.

Psalm 76:1-12

Where God is honoured the people live in peace and prosperity. None can stand against God. His anger will strike out against those who attack people who honour Him. God will break the pride of those who stand against Him. He will judge those who do evil and strike down those who oppress the weak. Let us honour and serve God so that His might will not be directed against us.

Colossians 1:1-17

The Gospel is bearing fruit throughout the whole earth. Let us never doubt that the Gospel has the power to transform lives and, through those changed lives, societies. If we listen to the Gospel message and truly understand it, we will be transformed both by the message and by the Holy Spirit. Let us have a confident hope in what God has planned for us.
Once more as I read this I am challenged to improve my prayer life. Paul writes here that he has not stopped praying for the Christians in Colossae since he first heard about them. I know that I need to work on giving a more central place in my life. Paul prayed that they would be given a complete knowledge of God’s will in addition to spiritual wisdom and understanding. We should both pray those things for others and for ourselves, so that both we and they will honour and please God by bearing the fruit of righteousness. One essential to acquiring that knowledge and wisdom is developing a strong prayer life. Let us strive to spend our time in prayer.

Jeremiah 2:31-4:18

As I read the first part of this passage I thought about many people today. There are those who say that we do not need God. That it is possible to know what is right and what is wrong without God. We have grown beyond Him and do not need God anymore. Then there are those who promote abortion and policies which harm the needy while claiming to be people of God. Finally, there are those who claim that they are turning to God and seeking to do His will, those who strive to put on the appearance of righteousness while doing evil, whether it is greed, or sexual sin, or violence against the innocent, or all three. God is not fooled and will bring judgement.

God is bringing judgement against those who refuse to follow His word. He will strike them down with pestilence and violence. The destroyer of nations is at the door. The time to light the signal fires to warn people to flee has come. Destruction is about to fall on us. Yet, even now, with the destruction unleashed, God tells us that if we throw away our idols and turn to Him, He will turn it aside. If we dedicate ourselves to truth, justice, and righteousness, He will listen to our cries and save us. Let us plow up the hard ground of our hearts and plant seeds of righteousness.

I am using One Year Bible Online for my daily Bible study. For today, One Year Bible Online links here. I have found that by writing this daily blog of what I see when I read these scriptures, I get more out of them. I hope that by posting these ruminations others may get some benefit as well. In order to make that possible I read the passages and write my thoughts a day in advance. If you have any thoughts or comments regarding these verses or what I have written about them, please post them.

Jeremiah 2:31-4:18

In the middle of prophecies condemning the people of Israel and Judah for their sins and idolatry is a passage which offers great hope. God begs for us to come back to Him. He promises that He will accept us home with open arms, if only we will acknowledge our guilt and sin. If we will come back to Him, confessing the error of our ways, He will provide us with shepherds who will guide us into wisdom and understanding. God is calling us back to Him, are we listening? More importantly, are we giving His message of forgiveness and redemption to those around us?

Colossians 1:1-17

Today we have yet another passage where Paul talks about his ongoing prayer for a group of people. It is clear to me that I am being challenged to improve my prayer life. Paul commends the Colossians for their love of all of God’s people, a love which he says they have shown since they first heard the Gospel. The Gospel is changing lives all over the world, just as it changed ours. Do we believe in the ability of the Gospel to change lives? Have I allowed the Gospel to change my life?
Paul is praying that God give the believers in Colossae complete knowledge of His will and spiritual wisdom and understanding. Are we praying for this for ourselves and for our fellow believers? I desire complete knowledge of God’s will, as well as spiritual wisdom and understanding so that I can live a life worthy of Christ. I want to grow in the knowledge of God so that I can be strengthened by His power, which will give me patience and endurance. I give joyous thanks to God because He has brought me out of darkness to live in His light.

Psalm 76:1-12

The notes say that the word the NLT translates as Jerusalem is actually the Hebrew for Salem, which it says is another name for Jerusalem (the NIV uses Salem). The Hebrew word “Salem” is based on the Hebrew word for peace. The gist of the passage from other translations is that God places his movable shelter (tent/tabernacle) in “Salem”. When I read the whole psalm, I read that as saying that God dwells in peace. The psalmist says that God has destroyed the weapons of war and that at God’s rebuke the horse and chariot are still. None can stand against God and where He chooses to make His dwelling there will be peace.

DSCN4020

Proverbs 24:21-22

The proverb warns us to fear the Lord and those who rule. It advises staying away from rebels because sudden destruction is likely to come upon them and those nearby. Several translations translate the word which the NLT translates as “rebel” as “those seeking change” (or some variation on that). It made me realize that in part what the writer is warning against are those who seek change for the sake of change. All too often, when people want to change things they change good things along with bad. It is important to know why something is the way it is before advocating making changes (even when the way things are is not good).

Two Birds Wait Their Turn

Jeremiah 2:31-4:18

Jeremiah accuses the people of Judah of worshiping other gods at the same time that they are calling on the Lord to save them from their enemies. He, also, accuses them of putting their trust in other nations to save them from their enemies rather then relying on God. Jeremiah tells them that they while they are crying out to God requesting His aid they are continuing to do evil. I need to study my own life to see how much I am guilty of the same thing. Jeremiah condemns the people of Judah for not turning to God, for following the example of the Northern Kingdom, even after they saw what happened to it. Jeremiah tells the people of Israel and Judah that if they turn back to God He will bring them back from exile. He warns the people of Judah that time is running short to turn back to God and turn from their pride in their evil ways. God has raised up a fire of judgement against them because of their sins. If they do not turn from their sins at once the fire will come down upon them. I believe that God has a similar judgement in store for the people of America. Too many Christians are putting their hope in politics when they should be putting their hope in prayer and in the mercies of an ever-loving God. We should not be campaigning to change the laws of this country, we should be “campaigning” to change the hearts of the people of this country.

Colossians 1:1-17

Paul and Timothy co-wrote this letter to the Church in Colosse. They start off by saying that they pray continuously for the believers in Colosse and thank God for them. This is not the first of Paul’s letters that he began with such a greeting. I think this stands as a challenge and judgement upon the Church in America today. There are few who pray with the dedication that Paul showed. Paul tells the Colossians that the Gospel is spreading throughout the world changing lives. If we would spend the same amount of time and energy praying that Paul did, we would see similar levels of changed lives. Paul commends them for their love for others and then repeats that he has not stopped praying for them. He is praying that God will give them complete knowledge of His will and spiritual wisdom. We should desire the same knowledge and wisdom so that we, also, will lead lives that always honor and please the Lord. Let us pray that those around us will strengthened with God’s power so that they will be given the endurance and patience that they need. I will strive to thank God for everything He has done for me, being continually filled with His joy.

Fall Wreath

Psalm 76:1-12

Let us not be afraid to speak the Gospel to those around us, for our God is more powerful than all of our enemies and no one can stand against Him. If we faithfully serve Him, He will defend us. Those who attack us will be destroyed, but let us pray that instead of being destroyed, they allow God to change their lives. Let us intercede with God that instead of bringing judgement and destruction on those who have chosen to be our enemies, He will bring His Spirit into their lives and change them into our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Proverbs 24:21-22

Fear the Lord and do not rebel against Him. Disaster will suddenly strike those who rebel against the Lord.Let us pray for them and strive to bring the healing of the Holy Spirit to them.
