I have spent a lot of time thinking about how I want to approach today’s passage.  There exist two separate prophecies in today’s passage which I think I should touch on and which I think are connected.  However, I am not sure how to describe that connection.  So I will start with the first one.  Ezekiel starts by prophesying against those who tell other people their own thoughts and opinions but pretend that those thoughts are from God.  Rather than address the actual weaknesses in beliefs and actions of the people to whom they prophesy, rather than giving those people tools to stand up to hard times, they merely tell them things which make those people feel better than themselves.  Ezekiel also speaks out against those who encourage the wicked to feel good about themselves while tearing down the righteous, those who socially destroy the good while saying good things about those who do evil.  As I was writing about this prophecy, I realized that Ezekiel was not really talking to these false prophets.  Rather, he was warning people to beware of those who tell them what they want to hear.  He was warning us to ignore those who make us feel good about ourselves and look for those who show us what we do wrong.  He was also telling those whom God has called to not fall for the temptation of telling people what they want to hear.

The second prophecy addresses those who hypocritically seek God’s guidance while allowing themselves to worship idols in their own hearts.  Here God addresses through Ezekiel our tendency to trick ourselves into thinking that we are worshiping God while we are selfishly seeking our own wants and desires.  It is the sort of thing which leads us to fall into the temptation to listen to the false prophets from the first prophecy.  If we fall for either of these sins, God will bring suffering upon us to make us aware that He is the Lord, that He is OUR Lord.
