I wish I had the artistic ability to create an animation of Ezekiel’s description of his vision of the likeness of the glory of the Lord and the four living creatures which accompanied it.  I feel like I am missing something of the meaning of the imagery because I do not feel like I get a complete picture of what Ezekiel is describing.  However, I do think that I get a clear understanding of God’s message to Ezekiel, and to us, from what God tells Ezekiel in His calling of him.

God begins by telling Ezekiel to not be rebellious the way the people he is being sent to are rebellious, or perhaps it would be better to phrase it that Ezekiel should not be rebellious even though he is being sent to a rebellious people.  Additionally, God told Ezekiel not to be afraid of the people to whom he was being sent.  Then God gave Ezekiel His words on a scroll and told Ezekiel to eat it.  After Ezekiel ate the scroll which God gave him, God told him to speak to the people the words which God had given him.  I have never been able to avoid the idea that what God was telling Ezekiel was that he should internalize the words which had given him to speak before he spoke them to others.  To summarize thus far: we should not be afraid of the people to whom God has sent us, but we should be sure to internalize and live by the message which He has given us for them before we begin speaking it to them.

After Ezekiel took seven days to meditate on the meaning of God’s initial calling to him, God spoke with him once more.  God told Ezekiel that He was making Ezekiel a watchman over Israel.  Ezekiel was to give a warning to those for whom God gave him a warning.  If Ezekiel did not give them the warning from God, and they died in their sins, God would hold Ezekiel accountable for their lives.  On the other hand, if Ezekiel warned them and they still did not turn from their sins, they would still die in their sins, but God would not hold Ezekiel accountable.  God also told Ezekiel that some of them, those who could be counted as righteous, would hear Ezekiel’s warning and turn from their sin.  God warns Ezekiel, and us, that we should not fail to give the warning God has for those who sin just because we do not believe that they will listen to the warning and change their ways.
