September 20, 2026 Bible Study — God Uses Our Bad Decisions to Teach Us How to Serve Him

Today, I am reading and commenting on  Hosea 1-7.

I have a Youtube video of me reading the Scripture passage and my comments. Please check it out and let me know your thoughts.

When I begin reading Hosea I always wonder if perhaps what happened here is that Hosea fell in love with Gomer, who was a prostitute (or, perhaps became one after their marriage), and then God used his experience with her to give Hosea insight into God’s dealing with the Kingdom of Israel.  It falls within my understanding of the way God works that Hosea may have come to realize that God guided him to marrying a woman who most of us would say was a bad choice in order to convey His message to Israel through Hosea.  Sometimes God uses our bad decisions to teach us lessons, and sometimes those lessons are for us to convey to others.  Of course, it is also possible that God spoke to Hosea and he knew what he was getting into from the moment he took Gomer as his wife.

I am not quite sure how to put together all of what Hosea says in this passage.  He speaks of God saying that Israel is not His people, but then saying that God will make them once more His people.  Then going on to talk about why God says that the people of Israel are not His people before once again saying that God will bring them back to Himself.  My difficulty is not with understanding the message.  It is with figuring out how to combine the different ways Hosea prophesies about this here.

Having said that, Hosea explains how things got to this point.  He tells us that there is no faithfulness or steadfast love, and no knowledge of God in the land.  This leads to there being swearing, lying, murder, stealing, and other atrocities in the land.  The people of Israel rejected God, and then wondered why terrible things happened all around them.  We see the same thing today.  People reject God, do not even know what He says, or even is, and then complain about the results of living this way.  They reject Him who is the source of all good and wonder why evil fills the land.
