June 19, 2026 Bible Study — If You Take Refuge in the Lord, You Won’t Fear the Collapse of Society

Today, I am reading and commenting on Psalms 10-17.

I have a Youtube video of me reading the Scripture passage and my comments. Please check it out and let me know your thoughts.

OK, yesterday I tried to comment on each psalm in the passage.  I am not going to do that today.   I will say that today is the first time this year where I do not like the way the ESV translates something.  In Psalm 11 verses 1-3 I did not see at first the message I usually get from it.  I completely missed what it was saying when I first read it, despite the fact that I have often commented on it.  It was only when I went back to start writing that I realized which passage it is.  Because I think it is important for us to understand its message since it applies today I am going to say it from my own voice.
I take refuge in the Lord, so how can you say to me, “Flee to the mountains and prepare to defend you and yours.  Wicked people are preparing to come after you and take your stuff.  They will incite the mobs to overthrow law and order so that they can force you to bend the knee to them.  They have taken over the courts and destroyed the foundations of our society.  If you don’t go along with them they will destroy you.  There is nothing you, or any upright person, can do.”
The psalmist continues to respond to that negative thought by saying that he doesn’t care about any of that.  God is still on His throne and nothing the wicked can do can change that.  It may look like they are destroying the foundations of our society, but God hates those who seek violence.   God is righteous and He loves righteous deeds.  So, when the wicked attempt to destroy the foundations of society, we can continue to do what is righteous and not fear the consequences they may try to impose upon us for doing so.

In Psalm 12 the psalmist continues, at least to some extent, that theme.  He writes that the godly ones are gone and that everyone lies.  He tells us that God will arise and cut off those who think that they can change reality by telling lies.  The words of the Lord are pure, and He will guard those who seek to continue to believe them.  The wicked may seem to be everywhere and vileness may be exulted, but God is still on His throne.  And this is the point we must remember: the worldly may think that if they can just control what words we hear that they can shape our thoughts and convince us that night is day and that evil is good.  Let us continue to take refuge in the Lord and remember that He is on His throne ruling over the earth.  In Psalm 10, the psalmist tells us that the wicked thinks, “There is no God.” and in Psalm 14 he writes that the fool says, “There is no God.”  But thinking it and saying it does not make it so.   It just makes you do foolish things.
