Ezekiel continues his prophecy against Tyre.  I believe that his prophecy against Tyre is the longest such prophecy against any nation other than Israel and Judah in the Bible.  I am not sure why God gave such an extensive prophecy against the city of Tyre.  However, let’s look at what He says about Tyre.  He speaks about how proud and arrogant they were as a result of their riches.   They were a center for trade with all of the known nations, which led them to believe that no one would, or even could, sustain war against them.  Their rulers thought that they were gods.  They withstood the siege of Nebuchadnezzar, but were weakened by it (and the mainland portion of Tyre was destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar).  Later, their pride made them refuse to allow Alexander to offer sacrifices in their temple because he was not one of them.  Which led Alexander to use the ruins of the old city to build a causeway to the island upon which the city of Tyre sat.  Alexander then sacked the city.   After Alexander, Tyre never again reached the same level of prominence in the world, and there is reason to believe that the land upon which the city stood is no longer inhabited.

Tyre believed that its wealth and geographical location made it invulnerable.  The people of Tyre, especially their rulers, believed that they could get away with anything.  Ezekiel lays out the extent of their wealth, and the way in which the economies of all nations depended upon them so that no one could mistake how crucial they were.  He even acknowledged how they used that wealth and unique position to do good things.  However, in their arrogance they believed they could do what they wished to who they wished and never suffer any consequences.  The wealth of our nation, nor its geographical isolation, will protect us from the consequences of the sins which we practice.
