As I started reading today’s passage it made me despondent and I wondered what purpose it serves.  Then it occurred to me that it serves two purposes.  It reminds those living in the aftermath of God’s judgement that this has happened before.  It also strives to incentivize those who see God’s judgement coming to call people to repentance before it comes to this.  Let us call those we meet, those we love, to come to God before it is too late, before they live in the time when there is no comfort.  Do not rebel against God’s commands.  Listen to them.  Obey them.  Teach others the wisdom of God’s love and law.  Do it now before it is too late for them.  Perhaps if they listen and heed, the day of sorrows will not come for them.
