April 8, 2022 Bible Study — David Kills The Messenger Who Brought Him News Of King Saul’s Death

Today, I am reading and commenting on  2 Samuel 1-3.

An interesting thing occurred to me as I was trying to determine what to write about today.  As I considered the account of the Amelekite who brought David the news of Saul’s death, I realized that King Saul was not the only one who thought that David had ambitions to become king of Israel.  I am not sure why this never occurred to me before, after all, Jonathan, King Saul’s son and heir, had spoken of David becoming king and being his second in command.  In any case, the Amelekite in this account thought that David would reward him for bringing him Saul’s crown and armband, actually he thought that David would reward him for having delivered the coup de gras to King Saul.  Instead, David had the Amelekite killed.  Other accounts state that King Saul killed himself.  So, we must ask ourselves why did the Amelekite claim to have killed King Saul, even if only as a mercy killing?  Every time I read this I cannot help but wonder what would have happened had the Amelekite been more truthful in his account of what happened.

I use the daily Bible reading schedule from “The Bible.net” for my daily Bible reading.
