I love this passage about Ezekiel’s vision of the valley of dry bones.  It tells us so much about hope and God’s power.  Perhaps the part we often overlook is Ezekiel’s faith.  When God asks Ezekiel if the bones he sees in this vision can live, Ezekiel does not say, “Of course not.”  He also does not say, “Of course they can.”  Instead Ezekiel says, “O Lord God, you know.”  Ezekiel did not look at the dry bones and think that they could no longer do as God willed.  He knew that it was up to God whether or not those bones could live once more.  There is another part to this as well.  God didn’t just command the bones to come together and live.  He told Ezekiel to prophesy that the bones would live.  And then, when Ezekiel prophesied as God commanded, the bones came together, but they didn’t come to life.  It was only when God told Ezekiel to prophesy to the spirit of those bones, and when Ezekiel did as God commanded once more, that life came into the bodies which had formed on the bones.  Ezekiel could have given up when the first prophecy failed to bring life.  He had prophesied and brought about change, but it wasn’t enough.  The bones had come together and had bodies, but they were not alive.  It was only when God told him to prophesy to the breath, to the spirit, of the bones that the bodies came to life.  We must remember that part of the lesson.  Don’t tell God, “I did what you told me to do and it didn’t work.”  It did work, it just wasn’t enough.  God had more for you to do.  So do the rest of the job God gave you.
