March 5, 2024 Bible Study — Do Not Imitate the Detestable Practices of the Nations

Today, I am reading and commenting on  Deuteronomy 18-20.

Moses tells the Israelites that they must not imitate the detestable practices of the nations who in habit the land they are about to enter.  Then he lists some of the practices which they are not to imitate.  These practices are divination, sorcery, witchcraft, interpreting omens, consulting the dead, and sacrificing your children.  Moses told the Israelites that those practices were why God was going to drive those people out of the land before the Israelites.  I find the fact that this passage considers sacrificing children to be on par with divination and sorcery strange.  When I was young I was taught that divination, sorcery, interpreting omens, etc. were foolish and silly, but that sacrificing children was an horrific evil.  Perhaps the failure of the generation before me to recognize the evil of practicing divination led to so many in my generation, and younger, to no longer recognize the evil of sacrificing children.  Certainly, as sacrificing children has become more acceptable, so too has seeking to divine the future by various means and to cast spells has also become more acceptable.

March 5, 2023 Bible Study — The Israelites Warned Against Detestable Practices

Today, I am reading and commenting on  Deuteronomy 18-20.

Moses warns the Israelites against imitating the detestable practices of the people who live in the land which God is giving them.  Then he lists at least some of the detestable ways they are not to imitate.

  • sacrifice their child
  • practice divination or sorcery
  • interpret omens
  • engage in witchcraft
  • cast spells
  • be a medium, or spiritist, or in any way consult the dead

I find that to be a very interesting list, because to me everything on that list is of a “kind”, except for the first one.  Everything on that list after the first item qualifies under what we today call “doing magic”.  Whenever I read this list I wonder what it is about practicing magic, which is what I classify most of this list as, which puts it in the same category as killing one’s child.  I think this list says something about how our society’s view of abortion influences its approach to rational thought.

March 5, 2022 Bible Study — God Condemns Sacrificing Children, Practicing Witchcraft, And Divination

Today, I am reading and commenting on  Deuteronomy 18-20.

Moses warned the Israelites against imitating the “detestable ways” of the people already living there.  To make sure we would know what he meant describes those “detestable ways”.  First, he calls sacrificing their children detestable.  Then he lists a bunch of methods for either determining or controlling the future: divination, sorcery, interpreting omens, witchcraft, casting spells, consulting the dead.  We have long considered sacrificing children to be something horrific (although I would argue that many today no longer do so as long as the sacrifice takes place before birth), but dismissed the others as relatively minor misdeeds by the uneducated.  However, this is not the only place in the Bible where we are told such acts are serious sins, comparable to sacrificing a child.  We must place our faith in God.  When He desires for us to know more about the future than what He has revealed in the Bible He will raise up a prophet to give us His message.  We will know that such prophets are from God because the message they give us will be consistent with what He has already revealed and the predictions which they make will come to pass.

March 5, 2021 Bible Study Recognizing The Difference Between A True Expert (Prophet) And A Fraud

Today, I am reading and commenting on  Deuteronomy 18-20.

Moses warned the people of Israel that they must not imitate the detestable practices of the people in the land they were entering.   He then lists some of the detestable practices they must not imitate.  The very first one he mentions is that they must not sacrifice any of their children.  It was because of these detestable practices that God drove those nations out of the land.  Related to that Moses warns the people against relying on those who practice sorcery or divination to plan.  Instead we should listen to the prophets whom God will raise up among us.  Further Moses tells us how to distinguish a prophet raised up by God from an imposter.  Those things which a true prophet predicts will happen or come true.  If the prophet’s predictions do not meet that criteria, they are a fraud.  We should apply this lesson to the many experts who today tell us how we should live our lives.

March 5, 2020 Bible Study –Accepting That We Are Not In Control

I am using the daily Bible reading schedule from “The Bible.net” for my daily Bible reading.

Today, I am reading and commenting on Deuteronomy 18-20.

Moses warned the Israelites against adopting the detestable practices of the people who already lived in the land they were entering.  The practices they were not to imitate were sacrificing their children, various forms of predicting the future, attempts to control the world around them using spells, and contacting the dead.  Moses then goes on to tell the people how to recognize a genuine prophet of God.  Anyone who claims to be a genuine prophet of God will make predictions about the future.  If those predictions fail to come true, the prophet is a fraud.  So, Moses links sacrificing children with soothsaying, witchcraft, and necromancy.  When I read the Old Testament prophecies against child sacrifice I find myself seeing abortion as a modern form of the same practices.  All of these linked practices represent attempts to gain control over the universe around us and cheat death, rather than turn to the One who does indeed control the universe around us and Who has power over death.

March 5, 2019 Bible Study — God Forbids Child Sacrifice and WitchCraft

I am using the daily Bible reading schedule from “The Bible.net” for my daily Bible reading.

Today, I am reading and commenting on Deuteronomy 18-20.

There are several things in today’s passage which I want to highlight.  I am not sure if my thoughts on them are connected, we will see together as I write them out.  God forbids sacrificing children.  Connected directly with that are the practices of fortune telling, witchcraft, casting spells, and speaking with the dead.  When I read the prohibition against sacrificing children I think of the segments of modern society who treat abortion as a sacrament.   However, I had never noticed the connection between sacrificing babies and the other things mentioned here.  Now that I noticed the connection made here it strikes me that I believe the same connection is made throughout the Old Testament.  Further, it seems to me that many of those who promote abortion today believe in witchcraft, divination, and speaking with the dead (and vice versa).

Moses tells us that God will raise up prophets from time to time and that God will personally deal with anyone who refuses to listen to the messages those prophets deliver.  Most importantly, Moses tells us how to recognize such a prophet.  If the prophet speaks in God’s name and what they say does not happen, or come true, they spoke without God’s authority.  We need to pay close attention to this, whether we are listening to such a prophet or we believe that we have been given a prophetic word from God.  There are numerous examples of men throughout my lifetime who sought to increase the clout of their ministry by making dire predictions.  A few of them were men who, until that point, I had held in high esteem as men of God.  When their predictions failed to come true, I dismissed them as spokesmen for God.  In each case, I believe they saw troubling things going on in our society and that those things would lead to disaster.  I believe they were correct in this part, but, in order to get people to change, they spoke a message on God’s behalf which God had not given them.  I believe that they were correct that the things they observed in our society will lead to disaster.  At the time, I believed (and was proven correct) that it would take longer for that disaster to come than they predicted.  It seems to me that they made their prediction in order to cause their listeners to view these problems with greater urgency, but, by doing so, they exceeded the authority which God had given them.

March 5, 2018 Bible Study — Detestable Things: Child Sacrifice and Consulting Fortunetellers

I am using the daily Bible reading schedule from “The Bible.net” for my daily Bible reading.

Today, I am reading and commenting on Deuteronomy 18-20.

Moses warned the Children of Israel not to imitate the detestable practices of the people living in the land. He highlights two such practices, sacrificing their children and consulting fortunetellers and sorcerers. It was because those people practiced these detestable practices that God drove them out of the land and gave it to the Israelites. We should take a lesson from this and avoid the detestable practices of those living around us who do not worship the Lord. Whenever I read these passages about the people driven out of the Promised Land sacrificing their children I am reminded of abortion in the modern world. So many of the problems of today’s society stem from that one sin.

Moses proceeds to tell us how we can distinguish between fortunetellers and prophets who speak in the name of the Lord. We must listen to the words spoken by prophets sent by God, but how do we know if someone is such a prophet? The answer is simple. When someone claims to be speaking in God’s name when they make a prediction, that prediction will come true. If it does not, they are a false prophet. Now, as I read this, sometimes a prophet will speak in the name of the Lord, and sometimes that prophet may merely be making predictions based on their own understanding. It is important that prophets make a clear distinction between these two things. It is important that we pay attention to when those who claim to be prophets make predictions. If we continue to lend credence to those who have falsely prophesied we bring dishonor to the name of the Lord.

March 5, 2017 Bible Study — Avoiding Detestable Practices

I am using the daily Bible reading schedule from “The Bible.net” for my daily Bible reading.

Today, I am reading and commenting on Deuteronomy 18-20.

God warned the people of Israel not to imitate the detestable customs of the people who were living in the land He was about to give them. The very first of those detestable practices which He singled out was that they were not to sacrifice their children. In many ways, all of the other practices He condemned here are intrinsically tied to that. All of the practices which are condemned here are attempts to warp the world around to serve our selfish desires. They are attempts to become gods, if only in a small way. I think in some ways we gain an understanding of this by comparing a prophet sent by God to those practicing the divination practices which were forbidden. The prophet sent by God is given a message from God concerning some future event so that his (or her) audience will more closely follow God’s will (Joseph received a prophetic message from God so that he would take Mary and Jesus to Egypt). The diviner seeks seeks to determine specific information about the future so that he, or those consulting him, can use it to their advantage. There are times when the line is a bit blurry, such as when we seek God’s guidance in making a decision, but even there we should be seeking to make the decision which most clearly adheres to God’s will, not the one which advances our desires. Sometimes that is the same thing and the closer our walk with God the more that will be true. More and more today I see people adopting the detestable practices God described here, practices which led God to drive the people living in the Promised Land out.

March 5, 2016 Bible Study — How To Know If Someone Is a Prophet From God

Today, I am reading and commenting on Deuteronomy 18-20.

As Moses recounted the laws which God gave the people of Israel he reminded them that they must never sacrifice their children. He lumped that practice in with various forms of divination, sorcery, and consulting the dead. These things were all forbidden to the children of Israel (and I believe to all who wish to serve God). Moses immediately followed that with telling them that God would raise up other prophets after him. We are to listen to what those prophets say and obey the commands God gives us through them. Moses addresses the obvious question; how will we know if someone who claims to be a prophet was sent by God? The answer is that if someone who claims to be a prophet from God makes a prediction which does not come true they are speaking without the authority of God. In such a case we are under no obligation to listen to what they have to say.
