October 17, 2015 Bible Study — Pray For All People

For today, One Year Bible Online links here. I am away this weekend Friday night through Sunday (October 16-18). I have gotten my studies for the weekend done in advance. I published both Saturday’s and Sunday’s studies Friday evening before I departed. I hope this does not cause anyone a problem.

Proverbs 25:18-19

The damage which can be caused by lies is just as great as the damage caused by weapons, even if it is less obvious. If you depend on an unreliable person in times of trouble, you will suffer as much as if you tried to walk on a freshly sprained ankle.

DSCN9595

Psalm 87

The psalmist tells us that some day the people of every nation will be counted as citizens of the City of God. Everyone who trusts and follows Jesus is a citizen of God’s Kingdom. There are people from every nation who know and obey God. I will praise His name. I am forever thankful that God has chosen to make me a citizen of His city.

DSCN9598

1 Timothy 2

Today’s passage starts off with a reminder once more to pray. In particular, we are told to pray for all people, to ask God to help them, to intercede with God on their behalf, and to thank God for them. That last is definitely a challenge. We are to thank God for the people we know whom we do not like, the people who have made our life more difficult. That means that we need to be thankful for those people. It can be easy for us to ask God to help them. After all, the ways in which God helps people makes them better people and we expect that if they are better people they will be less likely to make our life difficult. We have a lot more trouble being thankful that God has brought people into our life who make things more difficult for us.

DSCN9603

Jeremiah 30:1-31:26

Jeremiah prophesied that God would restore Israel to its land. He said that God would bring them healing even though they had received an incurable wound. It is important to remember that God can bring us healing no matter how badly we have been wounded. As I read Jeremiah’s prophecy it seems to bear a greater resemblance to modern Israel than to any previous period. We must never forget that God has given prophesies concerning the people of Israel.

Proverbs 25:17

Do not visit others too often. No matter how much they like you there is a limit to how much time they want to spend with you.

DSCN9589

Psalm 86

Nothing and no one else is like God. They can not do the things which God does. I will praise Him as I ask Him to teach me His ways, to cause me to live according to His truth.

DSCN9590

1 Timothy 1

Paul warns against listening to false teachings or getting caught up in discussing myths and genealogies (he is not talking about tracing your family tree, he is talking about trying to establish some genealogical connection to some spiritual figure of the past). All of these things spark controversies. Such things will distract us from the truly important things: having a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith. If you spend your time telling people what they can and can’t do, you have missed the point. The rules exist to show those who are rebellious and seek to defile the holy that what they are doing is wrong. Those who truly seek to do what is righteous do not need a set of rules to tell them what they should, or should not, do. God will speak to their spirit and they will know in their hearts what is wrong.

DSCN9591

Jeremiah 28-29

In this passage, Jeremiah is given a message against false prophets who told people what they wanted to hear rather than what God was saying. It is always a challenge for us to avoid believing that a message is from God when that message is what we would like to have happen. I believe that when God’s plans are what people want to happen He rarely sends a prophet to announce them. It is when what we want to happen is different from what He intends to do that He sends us prophets.
God has plans for us, even when we find ourselves in circumstances other than what we would wish. His plans are to do good for us and to give us a future. If we look for Him wholeheartedly, we will find Him. Let us seek His plans for our lives and He will give us hope.

October 15, 2015 Bible Study — Too Much Of A Good Thing Is Bad For You

DSCN9596

Proverbs 25:16

This proverb is a simple warning. Too much of a good thing is bad for you.

DSCN9576

Psalm 85

I will make this psalm my prayer. I will ask God to restore His people to Him. I will ask that He call my neighbors to worship Him. Oh Lord, show me how to minister to those I interact with everyday. More than that show me how to reach out to those who need to experience Your love now. Use me to bring people to You so that they may experience your love and truth.

DSCN9597

2 Thessalonians 3

Each and every one of us should work hard at whatever we are able. We should not allow ourselves to be idle and meddle in other people’s business. Let us strive to work hard to meet our own needs and the needs of those who are unable to provide for themselves. And even if we are unable to provide for our own needs, let us find something to work at, remembering that even the most disabled is still able to pray. Paul gives us a maxim, those who are able to work and do not shall not eat. Let us take care of our fellow believers by providing them with productive work to do. Most importantly, let us strive to find productive work to support ourselves.

DSCN9577

Jeremiah 26-27

Jeremiah once more called on the people of Jerusalem and Judah to listen to god and turn from their evil ways. He promised that if they did so, God would turn from His plan rescue them from the coming disaster. But the people did not listen. Instead, led by the religious leaders, they accused him of treason and sought his death. It was only because a few officials recognized that Jeremiah had merely called on people to follow God’s commands. He had not called on people to be treasonous, let alone committed any treasonous acts himself. Although around the same time, another prophet making similar prophesies was put to death.
Let us call on the people around us to turn from their evil ways and do God’s will. They may seek our deaths, nevertheless let us be faithful to God and seek to redeem them from the coming disaster.

Proverbs 25:15

If you patiently, and persistently, make your case, sooner or later, even the most obstinate and powerful person will give you what you want, if your want is reasonable (and possibly even if it isn’t). However, that patience and persistence must be accompanied by a gentle approach, or those with power are likely to take away your ability to continue to petition them.

DSCN9582

Psalm 84

I would rather be a servant in God’s house than a ruler anywhere else. Do I truly believe this? Am I willing to humbly do whatever I can to help God’s people? There is something to be said for humbly serving where one can without seeking recognition or decision making status.

DSCN9586

2 Thessalonians 2

Paul tells us that there are those who will claim that the day of Christ’s return has already happened. Paul tells us that there will arise a man of lawlessness. This man will fool, with signs and wonders, those who refuse to love the truth of the Gospel. When people reject the Gospel, they become gullible in other ways. The various deceptions and lies which are marshaled against the Gospel require us to stand firm in our faith in God’s word to us.

DSCN9587

Jeremiah 23:21-25:38

There are times when so many people falsely claim to have a message from God that God stops giving prophetic dreams to anyone. Jeremiah tells us that we should seek an answer from God, but that we should be hesitant to claim that we know what that answer is. I am convinced that there is absolute truth, but I am not convinced that I know what that absolute truth. I will not give up seeking for that truth, asking God to reveal that truth to me, just because I do not currently know the truth.

Proverbs 25:11-14

Timely advice and justified criticism are more beautiful and valuable than gold and silver art objects to those who are willing to listen to them. Don’t make the mistake of dismissing such advice and criticism. Instead listen to it and change your behaviors accordingly.

DSCN9608

Psalm 83

The psalmist reminds us that there have always been those who form alliances for the purpose of destroying God’s people. Those alliances are often among groups who seem like natural enemies of each other. However, God has always destroyed such groups and will continue to do so in the future. God is faithful and will protect His people.

DSCN9609

2 Thessalonians 1

Let us strive to have patience and endurance in whatever hardship or persecution we suffer. Remembering always that God will provide us with rest when Jesus returns. In the meantime, we can pray for those who are suffering more than we. In the face of persecution, let us seek to good things so that perhaps some of those who are persecuting us will repent of their many sins (the persecution of believers probably being among the least of their sins) and turn to God. I will pray for believers suffering persecution, that they may remain faithful, and I will pray for their persecutors, that they may repent of their sins and avoid God’s coming judgment.

DSCN9610

Jeremiah 22:1-23:20

Jeremiah prophesied to the final kings of Judah that they should do what was right and just, promising that God would sustain them and their descendants on the throne of Jerusalem if they did so. He then prophesied about and to the final three kings telling them that they would face destruction because of their refusal to turn from injustice and oppression. Rather than do God’s will, they chose to commit injustice and pursue their own pleasure. As a result, God destroyed them. Such is the fate of rulers and leaders who pursue selfish pleasures rather than God’s will for the good of the people they rule and/or lead.
Jeremiah goes on to condemn those spiritual leaders and prophets who tell people what they want to hear and refuse to warn them of God’s coming judgment for their sins. God will punish them and cause them to suffer. Jeremiah goes on to warn people against trusting such prophets.

Proverbs 25:9-10

Don’t betray another person’s secrets in order to win an argument. If you do, you will earn a reputation as a gossip and it will be difficult, if not impossible to get anyone to trust you again.

IMG_0029

Psalm 82

God declares to the rulers of this earth, who think that they are mini-gods, that they need to stop handing down unjust decisions which favor the wicked. He tells them that they will die like every other mortal. If they do not want to be subject to God’s judgment they must give justice to the weak and the fatherless, and uphold the rights of the poor and oppressed. This is what God demands of those whom He has given power on this earth.

IMG_0112

1 Thessalonians 5:4-28

Paul tells us to be clear-headed and alert since we live in the light of God where we can see His truth. He then goes on to tell us what that means: don’t be lazy, encourage the timid, take care of the weak, be patient with others. Most importantly, never repay evil with evil, instead we should do good to our fellow believers and to everyone else, even those who do evil to us. This is perhaps one of the hardest things for us to get our heads around. We are never justified in doing something to harm others, no matter what they have done to us. If we are truly followers of Christ, we do not claim to have a right to revenge.

IMG_0114

Jeremiah 19-21

This passage begins with Jeremiah’s prophecy that the people of Jerusalem and Judah would be shattered like the jar of clay he had just smashed in front of witnesses. And why was this going to happen? Because the people of Jerusalem and Judah were slaughtering their children as sacrifices to their idols. Our nation is doing the same thing. As a nation, we are sacrificing our unborn children through abortions to the god of convenience. If we, as a people, do not turn from our sins, especially this one, God will do to our nation (and not our nation alone, there are many nations on this earth which are following the same behavior) what He did to Judah and Jerusalem in Jeremiah’s day, and worse. Pray for our nation, pray for our neighbors, that they will repent of their sins and turn to God.

IMG_0055

Proverbs 25:6-8

The proverb writer reminds us not to try forcing everything to our maximum advantage. On the one hand, honors are greater when others bestow them upon us in recognition of our good deeds than when they are given because we point out that we deserve them. On the other hand, things we think put others at a disadvantage to us may turn out to be less than we thought.

IMG_0045

Psalm 81

I will make a joyful noise to the Lord (and if you have ever heard me sing, that is truly what it is), because He has lightened my burden. I will listen to God when He speaks and I will not worship any other gods.

IMG_0048

1 Thessalonians 4:1-5:3

We are called to live in a way which pleases God. It is not possible to do so if we allow ourselves to get involved in sexual sin. It is very hard to avoid sexual sin because our society today teaches that sexuality defines who we are as people. Those who reject Biblical instruction on sexual sin are not rejecting man-made rules, they are rejecting God. In a large part this is why sexual sin has such devastating consequences for society. If we truly love others we will avoid sexual sins, because all sexual sin involves treating others, and ourselves, as objects. Of course this also shows us how we can free ourselves from sexual sin, the more time we spend acting out our love for others the less time we will have to treat them like objects.

IMG_0049

Jeremiah 16:16-18:23

Jeremiah’s prophesies are directed at the people of Judah, but there are themes which apply to every people living in every land. At the beginning of this passage Jeremiah tells us that God said that the people of Israel had defiled His land. In this context, it is referring to the land of Israel. Yet, in truth every land is God’s land and the prophecy applies to the people in those lands who have done as God accused the people of Israel. God will punish those peoples as He punished the people of Israel. However, in the same way, if those people turn from their idols and worship God, He will bless them as He has blessed the people of Israel.
Those who put their trust in humans rather than in God will be like shrubs in the desert, stunted and bitter. However, those who put their trust in God are like trees planted by a river. They will not be bothered by the heat, nor suffer when the rains do not come. I believe that in this metaphor water, in its various forms, refers to love. If we do not look to God for His love, we will be constantly seeking love from those who do not love us. However, if we learn to trust in God’s love, we will know that we are loved and be able to love, even when everyone around us is seeking only to use us for their own advantage.

Proverbs 25:1-5

I interpret the first of these proverbs as telling us that it is an expression of God’s glory to have created this world with mysteries and it is to the glory of those in government to support investigations to solve those mysteries (investment in scientific research). A government will be secure if the wicked are removed from it.

DSCN9579

Psalm 80

Turn us again to Yourself, Oh God, that we might be saved. It will only be then that we will be able to prosper once more. Let us pray that God turns the people of this, and every, nation to Him. It will only be then that peace and justice will reign on this earth.

DSCN9580

1 Thessalonians 2:9-3:13

Paul commends the Thessalonian believers for accepting the Gospel as the word of God, which it is. There are those who think the Gospel message conveyed in the New Testament contains many good teachings, but they, also, believe that it was composed by men. Therefore they believe that they can pick and choose which of its teachings to follow.
Troubles will come for those who choose to accept the Gospel, in its entirety, as the word of God. This fact is why so many attempt to pick and choose which parts they will accept. Of course those same people are the ones from whom many of the troubles arise for those who follow the will of God.

DSCN9581

Jeremiah 14:11-16:15

As Jeremiah prophesied to the people of the coming disaster, they refused to listen. Instead, they listened to the prophets who told them that peace and prosperity were just around the corner. Jeremiah calls them false prophets to whom God has not spoken. If we spend a little time looking at what was going on in the world at the time of Jeremiah, we can see why God held the people accountable for listening to the false prophets. Anyone who looked at the world around them could see that peace was not on the horizon. Things were getting worse and rather than turn to God in repentance the people were doubling down on their sins. I fear for people today because I see people doing much the same thing now.

Proverbs 24:30-34

If you do not take the time to get your job done and to take care of the details, poverty will quickly overtake you. I find proverbs like this a challenge. I know that I am lazy and love sleep more than I ought. This reminds me not to procrastinate, but get things done when they need to be done.

DSCN9399

Psalm 79

When trouble stalks the land, let us cry out to God. Let us serve Him so that when He acts to save us He will be glorified.

DSCN9400

1 Thessalonians 1:1-2:8

Prayer is clearly the topic God is after me about. Yesterday, in the passage from Colossians, Paul’s instruction to devote ourselves to prayer struck me. Today, the first thing to strike my eyes was Paul saying that he prayed constantly. As a result of his prayer, the Holy Spirit reinforced Paul’s words with power giving those who heard assurance that he spoke the truth. If we fill our lives with prayer the Holy Spirit will give us joy, even in the midst of suffering.

DSCN9401

Jeremiah 12:1-14:10

We were made to cling to God the way a loincloth is made to cling to a man’s waist. If instead of doing so we follow our own desires and worship things other than God, God will rot away our pride and bring destruction upon us. God desires that we act to bring glory to His name by living lives which respect Him. Let us abandon our pride and give glory to God before it is too late.

Proverbs 24:28-29

Do not lie about your neighbor (and remember who Jesus said your neighbor was) in order to get back at them for perceived slights.

DSCN9381

Psalm 78:56-72

If we do not follow God’s commands there are no rituals, there are no symbolic items that we can turn to in order to avoid the consequences. But no matter how badly we screw up, God will still love us and give us another chance. If we but turn repent of our sins and turn back to God He will redeem us and welcome us back to His arms.

DSCN9387

Colossians 3:18-4

As Paul concludes his letter to the Colossian believers, he reiterates his instructions about relationships. The wording here is similar to the wording he uses elsewhere on this topic. It is important to read what he says here in light of what he says elsewhere on the same topics. Wives are supposed to submit to their husbands, but husbands are obligated to love their wives with the same self-sacrificial love that Christ has for the Church. Children are told to obey their parents, but parents are told not to aggravate their children. Those on the “power” side of a relationship are called on to seek what is best for those over whom society has given them power.
The most important part of today’s passage is just one sentence long.

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.

At least that is the most important part of today’s passage for me. I know that I fall far short of praying as much, and with as much focus, as I should. I will continue to strive to allow the Spirit to bring me to prayer with ever greater frequency and fervor.

DSCN9383

Jeremiah 10-11

We should not allow the signs in the skies to frighten us, even though those around us are terrified by them. Over the years, I remember reading time and again about some disaster we needed to look out for and be frightened by it. From the “Population Bomb” to Global Warming, some people have made predictions about coming disaster. Jeremiah tells us that these people are foolish because they worship creation rather than the Creator.
