Proverbs 29:12-14

When a leader gives credence to a liar, it will not be long until only wicked people are willing to give him advice (and they will gladly do so). Both the oppressor and the oppressed were made by God…and it is God’s intention that they love and care for one another. A government which gives justice to the poor will stand the test of time. However, if and when it stops doing so its days become numbered.

DSCN7102

Psalm 126

Let us live our lives so that those around us will see what God has done for us and say, “What amazing things the Lord has done for them.” In this life we plant the seeds of God’s word in tears and sorrow, but God will give us a harvest of joy and laughter.

DSCN7103

3 John 1-14

The writer encourages us to support those who travel around teaching God’s word to those who do not yet believe. Further, he warns us to be wary of Church leaders who undermine such missions because they are unable to control them. He reminds us not to follow bad examples, but only allow ourselves to be influenced by those who do the right things.

DSCN7104

Hosea 6-9

The words of Hosea were directed at Israel but they can be applied to us today. God wants us to know Him, to fellowship with Him, more than He wants sacrifices and offerings. He wants us to show love to our fellow man more than He wants us to follow any particular set of rules (although the rules He gave us are a good starting point for showing love). We have broken His covenant and betrayed His trust. He wants to heal us, but in order for Him to do so we must stop sinning. How many people do you know who are looking everywhere for an answer, but refuse to look to God? Are we not guilty of doing the same? We look for ways to stop the mass shootings, the acts of terrorism, that have happened lately, but we do not look to God! There have even been headlines claiming that God will not, cannot, help. I know that He can, and will, solve this problem, if we will only turn to Him and ask.

Proverbs 29:9-11

It is foolish to think that you can make things better by venting your anger. The wise restrain themselves and let their anger cool before expressing themselves.

DSCN7094

Psalm 125

If we trust the Lord, and act accordingly, we will be safe and secure. Furthermore the psalmist points out that if the people of a land are godly, their rulers will not be wicked. So, when the people believe that those running the government are evil, they have no one but themselves to blame. If they chose to start being godly, their rulers will be replaced with godly ones.

DSCN7095

2 John

We should love one another. This is not a new command with this letter, rather it goes back to the beginning of Jesus’ teachings and, for that matter, to the beginning of the world. There is a circular logic in the writer’s argument, but one with real logic to it if you pay close attention. In order to show our love to others, and to God, we need to follow God’s commands. However, we are not following God’s commands if we do not love one another. There is no separation between the two things. Every act which goes against God’s commands is a failure to love others. However, no matter what we do, we are not following God’s commands if we do not love one another.
The writer brings up another point. In our effort to love others, we must not encourage those who are teaching falsehood and deception. In particular, he points out those who teach that Christ was not truly a man. Even though he does not spell it out, I believe that the author would also include those who teach that Jesus was ONLY a man as well.

DSCN7096

Hosea 4-5

For me the key message in all of Hosea’s prophesies is in verse 4 of chapter 4:

Don’t point your finger at someone else and try to pass the blame!

There is special blame for the leaders for the people’s sins because they have led the people into idolatry and sin. It was the leaders’ job to lead the people into righteous and upright behavior and they have not only failed to do so, but they have done the opposite. However, this does not excuse the people because they have rejected those leaders who tried to lead them into righteous and upright behavior. Instead, the people have chosen to follow those leaders who lead them into idolatry and sin. Each and every one of us must take responsibility for our own actions. We must repent of our sins and turn to God.

Proverbs 29:5-8

People sometimes believe flattery and make mistakes as a result. So be careful about flattering your friends. You do not want to be the reason they think they are more capable than they really are. If you wish to be godly, care about the rights of the poor. It is only the wicked who fail to care.

DSCN9638

Psalm 124

I will remember that my life would be much different, and much worse, if God had not stood at my side and protected me. I know that He will continue to stand by my side. I will praise His name for what He has done for me.

DSCN9639

1 John 5

Anyone who believes that Jesus is the Chosen One of God has become a child of God. If you love the Father, you will love His children. The corollary being that if you do not love His children (every one of them) you do not love Him. Of course it works the other way as well. If love God’s children we will love God. If you do not love God, you do not love His children. God has testified that Jesus is His Son. Therefore if you do not believe that Jesus is the Son of God, you are calling God a liar. You cannot simultaneous call God a liar and claim to trust Him for your salvation. Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God can win the battle we are waging against the world.

DSCN9640

Hosea 1-3

Every time I read Hosea I feel bad for his children, receiving such names. Hosea prophesied that Israel would be treated by God as if He did not love them, as if they were not His people. Despite this their numbers would increase and God would once more take them back, show them His love, and call them His people. For the most part this passage is about Israel as a group of people, but there is also a lesson here for us as individuals.
We can learn a lesson from how Hosea dealt with his wife. He married her despite her reputation as a prostitute/immoral woman. When she was unfaithful to him, he put her aside. Yet, after a time, while she was still unfaithful to him, he bought her back. This reflects our relationship with God. We are like Gomer, Hosea’s wife. God brought us to Him despite our deserved reputation for unfaithfulness. He treated us well, but when we refused to be faithful He sent us away. Yet, God will still redeem us and give us a chance to turn to Him and give up our worship of things other than Him.

Proverbs 29:2-4

When the wicked run the government their policies lead everyone else to suffer, sometimes because of government oppression, sometimes just because of the economic consequences of government policy. When the godly run the government their policies lead everyone to be glad. The third of today’s proverbs explains part of why this is so. When the rulers enforce justice, there is stability because people know what to do to avoid government sanctions. When the rulers demands bribes there is instability because there is no way to know what will bring the government down on one’s business.

DSCN9632

Psalm 123

This psalm reminds us how we should live our lives. We should keep our eyes constantly on God so that we can see the smallest change in His will for us. I will focus on God so that I know when my actions cause Him even the most mild displeasure. I will strive to change my actions to bring Him pleasure, no matter how large or small those changes may need to be.

DSCN9633

1 John 4

If we are truly children of God then God’s Spirit lives in us. If God’s Spirit lives in us then we will love one another. If we do not have love for our fellow believers, and our fellow man, then God does not live in us and we are not His children. More than that, if God lives in us we will acknowledge both that Jesus is the Son of God and that He came in a real, human body. No one who denies either of those things is a child of God, let alone a prophet of God. If we wish to live in God we must live in love. The longer we live in God’s will the more we will love our fellow man. As God’s love grows in us, our fear will diminish. The more we are filled with God’s love the less we will fear God’s judgment. But, as we grow in love, not only will we have less fear of God’s judgment, we will have less fear of what mortals can do to us. We will have lees fear of anything.
No one can honestly say that they love God if they hate their fellow man. If we love God we will love those whom God loves and God loves all of mankind.

DSCN9634

Daniel 11:36-12:13

Daniel continues his description of the trials and troubles which will come. He tells us that many will be refined, cleansed, and purified by the trials and tribulations that will occur during the end times (and, during other times of strife which we might not consider as the “end times”). However, the wicked will continue in their wickedness and will fail to acknowledge, or even recognize, the ways in which events are working out according to God’s plans and predictions. Let us strive to be among the former and not the latter.

Psalm 122

Are we like the psalmist? Are we glad when they say, “Let us go to the House of the Lord?” or do we think, “It is so boring there?” Or worse yet, are we the people who cause others to say that the house of the Lord is boring? Let us strive to make the gathering of God’s people a place where others want to be. Let us strive to make the gathering of the Lord’s people something that those who love the Lord are sad when they cannot be there.

DSCN9631

1 John 3:7-24

If we do what is right we demonstrate that we are righteous in the same way that Christ is righteous, but if we keep on sinning we demonstrate that we belong to the devil. We cannot belong to both God and the devil, we must choose one or the other. And how do we know what is right? We know what is right by loving our fellow believers and acting out that love. Jesus gave us an example of what real love was when He gave up His very life for us. Therefore we should be ready and willing to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters in Christ (and those we hope will be our brothers and sisters in Christ).
Cain murdered Abel because Abel did what was pleasing to God and Cain hated him for it. In the same way the people of this world are likely to hate us. While the people of this world may hate us, we should love them because God desires for them to become our brothers and sisters. Those who hate others are no better than murderers. In fact, they are murderers. It is not possible to be both a murderer and a loving child of God.

DSCN9625

Daniel 11:2-35

The angel Gabriel recounts to Daniel the fall of the Persian Empire to Alexander the Great and the four kingdoms into which his empire was divided. The account describes the conflict between the two which fought over the land of Israel. The key message in all of this is that God is in control of history and knows what comes next.

Proverbs 28:27-28

If you give to the poor you will find that you have all that you need. However, those who ignore the needs of those less fortunate than themselves will never have enough. When the wicked are in charge, everyone seeks to avoid the notice of the government because everything is a crime. When the wicked suffer for their wickedness the righteous prosper.

DSCN9613

Psalm 121

I will not look to the mountains or the sea for help. I will look to God, because He is the only one who can always aid. He does not slumber nor sleep. Whenever trouble comes, whether by day, or by night, He will be watching and ready. Remember this psalm and read it whenever you are feeling afraid.

DSCN9614

1 John 2:18-3:6

The writer tells us that the idea that the AntiChrist is a single individual is mistaken. The antichrist is anyone who denies that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. Those who refuse to acknowledge the Father and the Son are antichrists. Such people are liars and many of them had once been in fellowship with the Body of Christ. Many of them had associated with the Church in order to pursue their own selfish interests, not out of any genuine interest in serving God.
The writer proceeds to remind us that we are God’s children if we do what is right. We do not yet know how God will change us when Christ returns, but we will be like Christ for we will see Him as He truly is. Therefore we purify ourselves so that we will pure as He is pure. If we truly live in Christ we will not keep on sinning because there is no sin in Christ. The degree to which we do keep on sinning suggests the degree to which we are apart from Christ (since there is no sin in Him). I strive to put such sinning aside so that I can become ever closer to Christ.

DSCN9623

Daniel 9:1-11

Daniel offered up a prayer for the people of Israel. He recognized that the people of Israel were punished for their sins as a group. I think we can easily make too much out of this prayer and the concept of corporate guilt which it presents. Nevertheless there is a degree to which we will suffer because of the sins of those others who belong to the same groups which we do. If we do not wish to be punished along with those around us we must separate ourselves from them and from their sin. And we must acknowledge the sin which the society we live has committed and is committing, recognizing that it is sin and seeking to make recompense for that sin to the best of our ability.

Proverbs 28:25-26

Greedy people strive to profit from conflicts and wars, doing everything they can to make them worse so that they can gain from others misfortune. However, those who trust God, and therefore follow His commands, will prosper in the long run.

DSCN9845

Psalm 120

Take your troubles to the Lord. Cry out to Him in prayer and He will answer you. Be honest even when those around you are deceitful and God will rescue you. Search for peace even when those among whom you live seek violence and war.

DSCN9611

1 John 2:1-17

The writer wrote this letter to teach us how to not sin. However, he points out that if we do sin, we have an advocate who will plead our case before God. That advocate is Jesus Christ. It does us no good to have an advocate with God if we do not know God. The writer tells us that everyone who knows God will obey God’s commands (perhaps intermittently, but obey nonetheless). The key command is both new and old. This new and old command is that we love one another. The command to love one another is old because it goes back to Moses and before. On the other hand it is new because Jesus gave us an example of what it means to live following it.
The writer goes on to write that if we live in God’s light(returning to the theme he introduced in yesterday’s passage) we will not love this world or the things which it offers. The world offers only selfish pleasures, while God offers us the opportunity to help and serve others. Rather than seek after the pleasures of this world in an effort to please ourselves, let us do those things which please God.

DSCN9612

Daniel 8

In today’s passage, Daniel describes another vision. In this vision, he saw the fall of the Persian Empire to Alexander the Great and the divide of Alexander’s Empire into four pieces. It is explained to Daniel that a ruler will rise over one of those pieces who will dominate those around him and commit sacrilege against the Temple and God. That final ruler will be brought down by the power of God. While most of this vision is concerning the things which happened from the fall of the Persian Empire until the rise of the Roman Empire, there is a lesson here for us to note. Rulers will arise who believe they have the power to take on God and His people. They may have success for a short time, but God will always triumph.

Proverbs 28:23-24

In the long run people like those who give them honest criticism to those who flatter them. If you tell me what I am doing wrong/what I do that you do not like, I can change it. If you tell me I am wonderful, it will never occur to me that some of my actions may have results I will not like.

DSCN9836

Psalm 119:153-176

If we truly love God’s word and follow His instructions, He will take our side and argue our case. If we follow God’s commands they will lead us down a path to joy. He will rescue us so that we can praise His name and teach others His commands.

DSCN9837

1 John 1

God is light and therefore sin cannot be hidden in His presence. As a result, the more we are in His presence the more aware we will be of our sinfulness. Claiming to be without sin is evidence that we are completely separated from God. On the other hand, if we are in God’s presence we will have no choice but to confess our sins. In that case, God will forgive our sins and His purity will cleanse us of those sins one by one until we have been cleansed of all wickedness.

DSCN9838

Daniel 7

This passage describes a vision which Daniel had where he saw four beasts. The four beasts represented four kingdoms which would arise on the earth. I have always understood these four kingdoms to be successive kingdoms each one following the previous. However, I realized reading this today that nowhere in this passage does it say that the four kingdoms were not at the same time. I am not sure what the significance of this insight is.
The most important aspect of this vision is the appearance of “someone like a son of man.” This person is Christ, who is given authority over every race, nation, and people on the earth. He will be given a kingdom which is eternal. All power will be taken from even the most terrifying of earthly governments and they will be made subject to Christ. There is more to this vision than that, but if we remember that ultimately Christ will be ruler over all it does not matter if we get the rest wrong.

Proverbs 28:21-22

DSCN9824

Psalm 119:129-152

The psalmist continues to make clear the benefits of following God’s word. He reminds us that God’s word is clear, so that even the simple can understand it (often, the simple find it easier to understand God’s word than those who think they are bright). God’s laws are always right…if you think differently it is you who are mistaken.

DSCN9827

2 Peter 3

Peter tells us that people will mock God’s truth, asking why it is taking so long for Jesus to return. However, there are two things which those scoffers do not understand. First, God’s perception of time is different than ours. Many people try to use Peter’s statement that, “A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day,” to apply to prophesies in the Bible, but when they are doing so they are missing the point. The point is that God does not distinguish between years and days. The point is, no matter how we try to figure it out, the day of Jesus’ return will not be known until it arrives. We need to be prepared for every day to be THAT day.
The second thing which the scoffers do not understand is that God has delayed Jesus’ return because He is patient. He is delaying THAT day in order to give more people the opportunity to respond to the Gospel message. It is up to us not to waste the time which God has given to us. We need to use this time to preach the Gospel to as many people as we can.

DSCN9830

Daniel 6

Those who were jealous of Daniel got a law passed which targeted his religious practices. A law which Daniel could not obey and remain true to God. Daniel had three choices. He flat out rejected the first, which was to abandon his faith. His second choice was to take his faith underground and only pray in secret. His third choice, and the one he took, was to continue his practice of praying openly. It is worth noting that he neither hid his practices, nor did he flaunt them in front of everyone. His enemies needed to seek out evidence of his “crime”, but he made no effort to hide it.
I think it is worth examining the second option a little bit. There have been times when people of faith have followed that option. However, in most of those cases, they were people who came to faith AFTER the faith had been made illegal. Daniel, on the other hand, was a prominent person of whom it was well-known that he was a person of faith. If he had hidden his prayer times, others would have taken it to mean that he had set aside his faith. This passage is a call to some of us to stand up in the face of persecution and declare our faith. It is a reminder that when we do so, God is capable of rescuing us from the punishment which the persecutors intend to deliver. More importantly, if we publicly display our faith in the face of threats of persecution we will show others that God matters more to us than anything else.

DSCN9826

Psalm 119:113-128

I will dedicate myself to obeying God. In order to do so I must stay away from those who halfheartedly follow his commands. I will meditate on God’s decrees and instructions. If we do what is right and just we have no need to tremble in fear of our enemies. If we faithfully serve God, He will teach us His decrees and deal with us from His unfailing love. I will love God’s commands more than wealth, or fame. God’s commands are right and every other way is false.

DSCN9828

2 Peter 2

Peter warns us against false teachers and gives us information on how to recognize them. They are greedy and sexually immoral (note how Peter links these two types of sin, just as Paul does). They make up lies in order to get people to give them their money. They brag about themselves…and if you look closely at what they are bragging about there is nothing to it. False teachers use sexual immorality to lure in the unstable, trapping those who were just beginning to escape from a life of sin. They are arrogant and scoff at the supernatural, claiming to have the power to compel demons. They refuse to acknowledge the sin in their own lives while joining in “fellowship” with believers and calling for “unity” (by which they mean not calling attention to their sins, while they call attention to yours). It is worth noting that we should both avoid false teachers and watch out for signs that we are exhibiting some of the characteristics of false teachers.

DSCN9829

Daniel 5

This is the passage from which we get the idiom, “read the writing on the wall.” The main point of this passage is that by the time the writing on the wall appeared it was too late to do anything about the coming doom. The people at the banquet knew their history, but paid no attention to it. They arrogantly thought that they were in control of their own destiny, when their predecessors who had built the empire they controlled had been forced to acknowledge a Power greater than themselves. If we have not learned the lessons of history and turned to God before the writing on the wall appears, it will be too late. Not only will it be too late, but we will not understand the writing on the wall when it appears either.
