Today, I am reading and commenting on Joshua 15-17.

The passage describes the territory which Joshua gave to each of the tribes, laying out the boundaries for each tribe. All of these descriptions have one common element. We are told that the tribe could not, or, at least, did not, drive out all of the people living in the land. A rather telling part of the passage is what the people of the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh said to Joshua when they asked him to allot them more land because there were so many of them. Joshua told them that if they needed more land they should clear out some of the people living in the lowlands in the area allotted to them. Their response was that those people were too strong for them. They failed to trust God’s promise to clear the land for them.

Today, I am reading and commenting on Joshua 12-14.

Today’s passage contains a list of the kings the Israelites defeated and the land they took control over under Joshua’s leadership (although Moses was still alive when they conquered the lands east of the Jordan). Despite the large number of kings whom they had defeated there was still a significant amount of land in the area God had promised them which the Israelites had not yet taken control over. God once more promised to drive the people living on the land still to be conquered out of that land, giving it to the Israelites. He instructed Joshua to include that land in the land designated for the various tribes as he divided the land among them.

The most interesting part of this passage is that Caleb came to Joshua and requested his grant of land. What is interesting is that this happened at a point where the passage had just told us a few verses back that Joshua was an old man. Further, Caleb states in his request that he is 85 years old. If Caleb, at 85 years old, was prepared to battle for control over the land which God had promised him, how can you, at whatever age you are, say that you are too old to fight the battle to which God is calling you?

Today, I am reading and commenting on Joshua 10-11.

This passage is a bloodthirsty account of the Israelites conquest of the land. The passage tells us that, under Joshua, the people of Israel defeated and killed all of the people in the land, as God had commanded them. Except for the Gibeonites. As I read this, it initially struck me as somewhat cruel and sad. However, there is a sentence in the middle of the passage which puts it in a different light: “For the Lord hardened their hearts and caused them to fight the Israelites.” Aside from the Gibeonites, all of the people in the land chose to make war against the Israelites. None of them chose to attempt to make peace with them. It is still sad, but living peaceably requires that the other person be willing to live in peace with you as well.

Today, I am reading and commenting on Joshua 8-9.

There are two stories here that reflect the successes and failures of the Israelites. When the Israelites first attacked Ai they were overconfident and cocky. They sent only a portion of their army against Ai and were soundly defeated. This was described in yesterday’s passage, which also told us that the overconfidence was a result of Achan’s sin. When they went up against Ai with God’s blessing, the full force of their army, and sound tactics, they were victorious. A short time later, another group of people in the land, the Gibeonites, deceived them into a treaty. This was in violation of God’s command to not make a treaty with any of the people in the land. The Gibeonites were clever and supplied their delegation to make it seem that they had traveled a long distance to meet with the Israelites. The Israelites failed to consult God, or to put conditions into the treaty to guard against such deception. The Israelites were deceived because they relied on their own ability to detect the deception. No matter how cunning we are at sniffing out deception, it is only by trusting in God, and seeking His advice that we can avoid being deceived.

Today, I am reading and commenting on Joshua 5-7.

I am struck by the fact that Joshua had to have all of the Israelite males circumcised after they crossed the Jordan River. I do not know what it means, but I find it worth noting that none of the males born between when they left Egypt and when they crossed the Jordan had been circumcised. The account of the attack on Jericho is striking. For six days, the Israelites marched around the city once a day. While marching around the city, they spoke not a word. There was just seven priests blowing rams horns while they marched. On the seventh day, they marched around the city seven times, with only the horns making a sound. This must have been very unsettling for the people living in Jericho. This passage reminds me that there are times when we should keep silent when facing those who oppose us.

March 11, 2016 Bible Study — Be Strong And Courageous

Today, I am reading and commenting on Joshua 1-4.

Upon Moses’ death God spoke with Joshua. He gave him a message which can serve as encouragement to us. In that message God told Joshua to be strong and courageous several times. Further, God gave Joshua, and us, a reason to be strong and courageous; He, the Lord our God, will be with us wherever we go. He will not fail us, nor will He abandon us. In turn we must obey God’s instructions. He has given us a Book of Instructions, let us meditate on it day and night. If we meditate on the Book which God has given us, and strive to follow the instructions contained within to the best of our ability, God will be with us in all that we do.

DSCN0226

I am struck by the ingeniousness of the memorial which the Israelites set up to mark their crossing of the Jordan. They took twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan River and constructed a memorial out of them. Now, that might not strike us as much. However, stones which have been in the middle of a river for any length of time have distinctive characteristics which can be recognized for years after. Geologists use such characteristics to identify areas where bodies of water once existed but have been long gone. By taking stones out of the middle of the Jordan River and using them to build a memorial to their crossing, the children of Israel left clear evidence to their descendants that the story about the crossing was true.

Today, I am reading and commenting on Deuteronomy 32-34.

In this passage Moses teaches the Israelites a song which encourages them to remember God’s wondrous acts. The song that while God is faithful and does no wrong, the same cannot be said for us. Despite the many great things which God has done for us, we turn from Him and look to other gods, gods which are not really gods at all. When we do this God will not rescue us from the consequences of our actions. On the other hand, when we put our trust in God, and faithfully serve only Him, our actions will lead to better consequences and God will intervene to bring us good things. The enemies of God’s people are fools who rely on a source of strength which cannot supply strength. Let us rely on God, who can truly provide us with the strength to face our troubles.

March 9, 2016 Bible Study — “Today I Am Giving You a Choice”

I am using the daily Bible reading schedule from “The Bible.net” for my daily Bible reading. I had been using One Year Bible Online, but it was time for a change.

DSCN0207

Today, I am reading and commenting on Deuteronomy 29-31.

God gave the people of Israel a choice. A choice which He also gives us. It is a choice between life and death, between prosperity and disaster. That choice is not too far away for us to reach, nor does it require us, or anyone else, to go to heroic lengths to obtain it. God has put His message on our lips and in our hearts so that we may obey it, if we so choose. Life and prosperity are not a reward for obeying God and death and disaster are not a punishment for disobeying. Those are just the results of our actions. If we obey God our actions will result in positive things happening for us, including God acting to provide us with all that we need. However, if we disobey God our actions will result in negative things happening to us, and God will not act to deflect the negative consequences of our actions. This is the choice we are faced with today.

DSCN0273

The choice which God has given us involves choosing to enter into a relationship with Him. Ever since Adam and Eve sinned, humans have been hiding from God, afraid to approach Him. We have come up with excuses and attempted to put distance between ourselves and Him. Repeatedly throughout the Bible and history God has told us that He is right there by us, waiting for us to turn to Him. We do not need to go to heroic lengths to find God. He is waiting right next to us for us to turn to Him. Let us turn to Him today and make that choice for life and prosperity.

DSCN5696

There is one final point I want to make about this passage. The people of Israel were about to make a change in their lives. They were about to enter a new land to settle there. They were going to face opposition. Through Moses, God told them not to be afraid, not to panic. He promised them that as they entered into this new life, this new place to live, that He would be with them and overcome all of the obstacles they would face. That struck close for me, because I am in the process of finding a new place to live. It is a scary process, but God has promised that He will be by my side as I go through this process. I do not need to fear because He will guide and protect me.

March 8, 2016 Bible Study — Blessings and Curses

DSCN0244

Today, I am reading and commenting on Deuteronomy 27-28.

Moses instructed the people of Israel that when they entered the land they were to set up some stones, coat them with plaster, and inscribe the commands on them. Then half of the tribes were to go to Mt Gerizim and declare God’s blessings over the people and the land. The other half of the tribes were to go to the top of Mt Ebal and declare God’s curses over the people. The blessings and curses were conditional. Moses declared that if they kept God’s commands they would receive the blessings, but if they did not keep His commands they would suffer the curses. This logic applies today. When a people keeps God’s commands they will be blessed. They will prosper and be successful in all they do. On the other hand, if they violate God’s commands, they will suffer and everything they turn their hand to will fail. The closer the people of a nation come to following God’s will, the more prosperous and powerful that nation will be.

March 7, 2016 Bible Study — Justice and Compassion For the Poor

I am using the daily Bible reading schedule from “The Bible.net” for my daily Bible reading. I had been using One Year Bible Online, but it was time for a change.

DSCN0246

Today, I am reading and commenting on Deuteronomy 24-26.

Today’s passage is a collection of miscellaneous instructions for the people of Israel. There are two related themes which run through many of them: justice and compassion for the poor/those in our power. One of the interesting things I see here are the repeated commands to provide the poor with the opportunity to help themselves. When you are gathering your harvest and forget a portion of the harvest in the field, do not go back for it. Instead, leave it for the poor to gather. Notice that it does not say to be as efficient as you can and give from your excess to the poor. Instead, it tells you to leave opportunities for the poor to gather for themselves. Several of the commands address issues related to making loans to the poor. When you make a loan, do not take the person’s means to produce as security against them paying you back. Also, when giving loans, do not take that which the person needs to fulfill their basic necessities as security (the passage speaks of clothing, but I think the rule extends beyond that).
