February 5, 2018 Bible Study — Controlling the Spread of Disease

I am using the daily Bible reading schedule from “The Bible.net” for my daily Bible reading.

Today, I am reading and commenting on Leviticus 13.

The book of Leviticus is one of the reasons I needed to start this blog in order to discipline myself to read through the Bible on a regular basis. I have really been struggling to get something out of the passages for the last several days, let alone something to write for this blog. Today is no exception. Today’s passage contains directions on inspecting people and items in order to maintain public health of the community of the Children of Israel. While we know from modern medical science that there are many communicable diseases which would not be caught by the procedures outlined in this passage, the health issues described here do indeed represent threats to the health of the entire community. The procedures outlined in this passage would indeed limit the spread of at least some communicable diseases.

February 5, 2017 Bible Study — Containing the Spread of Contagious Diseases

I am using the daily Bible reading schedule from “The Bible.net” for my daily Bible reading.

Today, I am reading and commenting on Leviticus 13.

I find it interesting that today’s passage seamlessly goes from discussing how to contain the spread of contagious skin diseases to how to contain the spread of mildew. It seems strange to us today. However, both would have been serious issues for a nomadic group of people as large as the children of Israel were. I think we rarely visualize how large the Israelite camp must have been. The count given of the number of men among them when they left the land of Egypt tells us that the camp consisted of somewhere between 1-1.5 million persons. This was a group of people large enough to be one of the top ten most populous cities in the United States, with no permanent structures, no running water, no sewage system. In addition to all of those people, they had flocks and herds. An outbreak of mildew in the camp could potentially be as devastating as an outbreak of disease since the mildew could easily destroy their clothing, their tents, and their food storage.

February 5, 2016 Bible Study — Diagnosing Contagion

I am using the daily Bible reading schedule from “The Bible.net” for my daily Bible reading. I had been using One Year Bible Online, but it was time for a change.

Today, I am reading and commenting on Leviticus 13.

The passage starts out by describing how to diagnose various types of skin diseases. The word used to describe these various skin diseases in Hebrew is the same word. However, we now consider these various diseases separate things. The word is traditionally translated as leprosy. The same word is used to describe mold or mildew on clothing, fabric, and leather. In all of these cases the word is used to describe a condition which is contagious and is likely to spread from the contaminated person (or item) to other people (or items). The passage describes how to minimize the chance of it spreading and how to tell if the risk has passed.
